Growing up as a professional dancer, Dr. Gokenbach always dreamt of a career on Broadway. While taking classes, she met a friend who encouraged her to pursue nursing because of the flexibility that came with the profession. Once she became a registered nurse, she would be permitted to take leaves of absence in order to perform in shows. In 1987, Dr. Gokenbach acquired a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University. In the years following her graduation, she began working as a director of emergency at the Detroit Medical Center. There, she found that she truly loved working as a nurse. Thus, Dr. Gokenbach decided to fully dedicate herself to her newfound career. She never returned to her prior level of dancing, but she continues to take classes at her local dance studio when she can.
In 1998, Dr. Gokenbach furthered her education once more by earning a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University. Later on, she returned to school again at the University of Pheonix and earned a Doctorate of Management. With her impressive credentials, Dr. Gokenbach was able to open Dr. Val Consultants in 2000. She continues to practice there today, though she has taken on additional roles along the way. In 2010, she became a contributing author to NurseTogether.com, as well as an administrator at Mitch Albom Charities. Since 2016, Dr. Gokenbach has excelled as the vice present and chief nursing officer at Baylor Scott & White Health, alongside her most recent venture as the leadership consultant, executive coach, and professional speaker at Dr. Val Leading Leaders.

She additionally completed philanthropic work in Haiti from 2010 until 2016, never losing sight of her primary goal to help others. An active member of her industry, Dr. Gokenbach maintains affiliation with Leadership America and the American Nurses Association. Looking towards the future, she hopes to become one of the most published authors in nursing. She would additionally like to build her network and return to public speaking.
