After earning an Associate of Science in respiratory therapy from Seminole State College of Florida, Ms. Honer followed with an Associate of Applied Science in business management in 2009, a Bachelor of Science in healthcare administration, cum laude, in 2010 and a Master of Science in health care management, cum laude, in 2014 from Columbia Southern. She continued her education with a Doctor of Business Administration from the same school in 2021.
Beginning her career as a respiratory therapist, Ms. Honer has excelled since 1987 as home health director with premier health care provider AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares, Florida. Her chief responsibilities include overseeing special transport teams transporting patients to and from the hospital or to and from doctors’ offices; managing departments; holding meetings; coordinating with the financers and marketers, physicians and officers; supervising payroll; meeting with patients and community service. Ms. Honer selects, develops and retains qualified staff, monitors employee files for compliance of department policies and procedure, state, federal, and licensing guidelines. In addition, she creates annual goals, objectives, monitor and balances monthly budgets and makes recommendations to reduce costs and improve revenue.
Avidly involved in community affairs, Ms. Honer supports the charitable institutions Relay for Life and March of Dimes and has addressed Lake County Schools on career opportunities and as part of Junior Achievement. In addition, she has excelled as a Basic Life Support, first aid, bloodborne pathogens instructor and a certified instructor in caring for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, She is a member of The Charmettes, Inc. non-profit organization and supports community blood drives and health fairs.
Ms. Honer’s numerous accolades with AdventHealth Waterman include Employee of the Year in 2013 and 2016, Best Supervisor of a Lifetime in 2014, Employee of the Quarter in 2010 and Employee of the Month in 1992. Additionally, she has garnered a Community Service Award from The Charmettes, Inc. in 2020 and a Superior Community Service Award from Omega Psi Phi in 2019.
Attributing her success to her family and to her colleagues for their encouragement and support, Ms. Honer became involved in her profession because of her passion to help others, particularly the less fortunate, to become better. She considers her career highlight to be her maintenance of a staff of 200 and more with a high success rate for patient satisfaction, as well as completing her doctorate degree from Columbia Southern University in 2021. It was an eight-year program and she was able to complete it in four and a half years. To her, it was also a tedious and a rigorous process as she had to defend her research in front of four doctors and had to provide them satisfactory answers within a specific time frame to pass the program. In the coming years, Ms. Honer hopes to become an online professor for less fortunate and underprivileged students, be it nationally or internationally.
