Louis C. Smit, Medicolegal Death Investigator and Coroner with the Rock County Coroner’s Office, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in death investigation.
Mr. Smit has employed his expertise as a coroner and medicolegal death investigator with the Rock County Coroner’s Office. He garnered experience in law enforcement for more than 20 years, serving as a police officer with the Henderson, Nevada Police Department. He was the deputy chief coroner with the Clark County Coroner’s Office and handled medical-legal death investigations and child death investigations for nearly 30 years. Mr. Smit is the author of the second edition of “Medical Examiner, Coroner Death Investigations” in 2000 and “Summary Field Guide for Death Investigation” in 1999. He additionally served as a clinical specialist, combat medic, and trooper in the United States Military.
In preparation for his career pursuits, Mr. Smit attended the National University in California, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in public administration in 1986. Additionally holding numerous professional certifications, he was a Registered National Medicolegal Death Investigator from 2011 to 2016 and is a fellow of the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. Since 2016, Mr. Smit has been an Affiliate Investigator with the National Association of Medical Examiners, and since 2017 he has been a member of the Society of Medicolegal Death Investigators.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Mr. Smit earned the President’s Call to Service Award from former President George H.W. Bush in 2006 and 2007 and was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He has maintained membership in numerous professional organizations related to his areas of expertise, including the California Homicide Investigators Association, the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners, the National Association of Medical Examiners, the American Society for Law Enforcement Training, and the California Association of Coroners, among others. Mr. Smit attributes his success to being well-rounded and personable, and in the coming years, he hopes to publish another book and rejoin the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners.
