With over 25 years of practiced expertise in his chosen field, Dr. Lall has achieved professional success through his work on behalf of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the financial agency of the United Nations. Specializing in analyzing the link between technological change and the microeconomic performance of various countries, he initially joined the IMF as an economist in 1996, and has gone on to hold numerous roles of senior leadership. Among them, he served as the assistant director of the Asia and Pacific Department, the European Department, and the Middle East and Central Asia Department, where he rose to become the deputy director in 2019. While working with the European Department, Dr. Lall is particularly proud to have coordinated the IMF’s rescue plan for Portugal during a period of economic crisis in Europe throughout the 2010s. Likewise, he led the IMF team that advised Egypt’s successful economic stabilization from 2017 to 2019.
Dr. Lall became involved in his profession out of a desire to avail himself on behalf of others, and to indulge in his longstanding fascination with economics. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics at Delhi University, he proceeded to study at Brown University, from which he received a Master of Arts in 1990 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1994. In accounting for his subsequent success, he credits his ability to translate concepts and theories into actionable policy.
