Fernando A. Ablaza, AIA, Director of Healthcare at TWINSTEPS architecture, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in patient care design.
Mr. Ablaza has had a distinguished career as an architect, though beginning his work experience as an engineering intern in 1981 for the City of Santa Fe Springs Department of Public Works. In 1987, he was a planning technician intern for the City of Monterey Park in the Planning Department. He’s had the honor of serving numerous architectural firms throughout his career, including Hatch-Colasuonno Architecture between 1984 and 1987, Hastings Lundstrom Architects between 1987 and 1988, Barasch Architects between 1988 and 1990, SWA Architects between 1990 and 2011, c|a ARCHITECTS between 2011 and 2013, Ware Malcomb in 2014, Taylor Design between 2014 and 2017, Savely Healthcare Architects in 2017, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting between 2018 and 2019, Gensler between 2019 and 2020, and Boulder Associates Architects between 2020 and 2021. He currently contributes his expertise to TWINSTEPS architecture, where he has thrived since 2022.
Attributing his success to his willingness to learn from those around him, Mr. Ablaza utilized this skill to earn a Bachelor of Architecture from California State Polytechnic University at Pomona in 1986. He subsequently obtained certification as a licensed architect from the California Board of Architectural Examiners in the Department of Consumer Affairs. He also participates as a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Mr. Ablaza finds his contribution to design rewarding. Architectural design allows him the opportunity to make a difference in the quality of the architectural solutions he provides. He is most proud of making a difference in patient care design that has provided an uplifting quality of lifefor the patients and caregivers who work in that environment. He has been recognized by many organizations as exceptional in the field of design, such as the AIA Design Excellence Citation Award by the American Institute of Architects, the Starnet Design Award, an honorable mention as the Best Healthcare Project by AZ Big Media, Best of Show in the Sculpture Category at the American Institute of Architecture of Orange County Art Walk by the American Institute of Architects, Kaiser Permanente Design Excellence Award in the Innovation Category from Kaiser Permanente, ENR Best California Healthcare Project of the Year by the Engineering News and Record, and the Citation Award for Commercial Architecture by the American Institute of Architects of Orange County.
In the upcoming years, he intends to continue working as a mentor for California Polytechnic University students and junior staff. His long-term goal is to transition into consulting or mentorship after retirement. When he is not working, he dedicates his time and attention to playing the drums and other percussion instruments at church and other venues.
