She began her career at American Baptist College where she held several positions including as a Title IX coordinator from 2011 to 2016, a professor of behavioral studies from 2011 to 2016, an adjunct professor from 2017 to 2023, a community care coordinator from 2017 to 2023, and a mental health services provider for faculty, staff and students from 2021 to 2023. She garnered a stellar reputation as an adjunct professor at Belmont University from 2017 to 2019.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Brazelton pursued an education at Tennessee State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in social work, cum laude, in 1998. She continued her academic efforts at Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, obtaining a Master of Science in Social Work in 2000. She concluded her studies at the University of Chicago, graduating with a PhD in social service administration in 2010. She is certified in youth mental health first aid from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Brazelton has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She contributed as a community volunteer to the Juvenile Court Foster Care Review Board and was a partner with the Adverse Childhood Experiences. She found success with her written work “The Secret Storm: Exploring the Disclosure Process of African American Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Across the Life Course” and “Aging, Physical Health, and Work and Family Role Changes Among African American Women: Strategies for Conducting Life Course Research with African American Women,” which she co-authored. 

In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Brazelton remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a member of the Coalition of Black Social Workers in Nashville, the National Association of Social Workers, the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Society of Social Work Research, the GWB Diversity Committee, the Non-Traditional Student Organization, the Society of Black Student Social Workers, the Women’s Issues Network, Phi Alpha Honor Society, the Council on Social Work Education, the Departmental Social Work Club of the Tennessee State University, and the National Aces Board.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. Brazelton has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She was selected for the Hartford Doctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Social Work and the Diversified Higher Education Faculty in Illinois Minority Fellowship. She was presented with the National Institute of Mental Health’s Council on Social Work Education Minority Research Fellowship Award, and the Outstanding Practicum Award by George Warren Brown School of Social Work. She received the Harriet Tubman Scholarship from George Warren Brown School of Social Work and placed first in the undergraduate humanities category of the 20th Annual University-Wide Research Symposium.
