With more than 15 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Flocken has excelled as both the founder and chief human of her public relations firm, SLH Communications, LLC, since 2018. In this position, she specializes in earned media relations, helping clients gain valuable third-party mentions in major publications such as The New York Times and The Washington Post as well as through influencers without paid promotion. Furthermore, her services encompass a broad spectrum of public relations needs, including editorial content strategy, ghostwriting, policy communications, and professional branding. She began her career as an education assistant with the South Coast Repertory Theater in 2007 before serving as an intern, office assistant and county counsel with the Lamoreaux Justice Center in 2008 and the editor of the opinions section for Occidental Weekly between 2009 and 2010. Ms. Flocken also supported her professional ambitions with an impressive academic foundation that includes the completion of the Conservatory Acting Program at the London Dramatic Academy in 2009, a Bachelor of Arts in English and comparative literary studies from Occidental College in 2010, and a Master of Science in literature and modernity from 1900 to the present from The University of Edinburgh in 2011.

As a testament to her many accomplishments, Ms. Flocken has been honored on numerous occasions, including being selected as a finalist for the San Diego Business Journal’s Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2020 and 2022. Receiving the Excellence in Journalism Award for PR, PIO and Trade Publications and General Writing for External Publication from the San Diego Press Club in 2021 and 2022, she was notably recognized as a “Woman of Influence” by SD Metro in 2022 and 2023. Beyond her primary responsibilities, she is dedicated to giving back to her community, providing pro bono services to creative professionals affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and conducting workshops on creating compelling elevator pitches.  She is also incredibly proud of her efforts to help a Planned Parenthood affiliate respond to the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on “Good Morning America.” Looking toward the future, Ms. Flocken hopes to dedicate her time and resources towards business development in the coming years, including expanding her client base, remaining up-to-date with the latest generative artificial intelligence tools, and promoting the human aspect of communications that is essential for the public relations industry.
