He currently excels as an investigator with Peak Fire Investigations, a position he has held since 2019, where he works independently from the insurance company, examining fire scenes to determine the cause of the fire, and using his training and certifications to identify the fire’s origin. His experience also includes serving as a special investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s office in California from 1984 to 2019, and as a special agent and investigator with the United States Air Force Reserve’s Air Force Office of Special Investigations from 1987 to 2002. Prior to this, Mr. Baker served as an air policeman and military working dog handler in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1972 and as a firefighter and assistant fire chief with the Covelo Fire Department from 1977 to 1984. He was also a deputy sheriff and resident deputy with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department during the same period, as well as a police officer with the Oroville Police Department from 1972 to 1977. He has also contributed to the field through his written works, serving as a chapter author for the Arson Constitution for the California District Attorneys Association in 2000 and authoring a training manual for the United States Air Force focused on fire and explosives investigation. He also dedicates his time to the California Conference of Arson Investigators, the International Association of Arson Investigators, and the Central Valley Fire Investigators. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has been honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow from Lions Clubs International Foundation, recognition from Chrysalis House in 2004, and the Arson Investigator of the Year award in 1981. He laid a solid educational foundation for these achievements, earning an Associate of Arts in fire science in 1976, an Associate of Arts in law enforcement in 1973, and becoming a certified master fire investigator in 2017.

Reflecting on his path, Mr. Baker began his working at the age of 15 as a deckhand on a charter boat in California, cleaning fish and working as a custodian. In 1963, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served as an air policeman and completed a tour in Vietnam. After leaving the Air Force, he transitioned to law enforcement, working as both a police officer and deputy sheriff, and went on to serve in the California Army National Guard. He later joined the California State Fire Marshal’s arson bomb investigation unit, finally moving into working as a fire investigator, instructor, and consultant. He takes great pride in delivering training sessions across the globe, finding immense satisfaction in witnessing students grasp the concepts he teaches. His expertise has also been instrumental in assisting law enforcement agencies in solving fire-related cases, contributing to the apprehension of suspects and enhancing investigations. He attributes his success to his problem-solving abilities and willingness to take decisive action. Looking to the future, he is motivated by the desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, with his ultimate goal being to support and guide his children as they pursue their own paths.
