Following a successful tenure in medicine and law, Dr. Brown has since retired and primarily works in medical, administrative and legal consulting as the president of Jeffrey A. Brown, Esq, MD, JD, MPH, Management and Medical – Legal Consultant. Working closely with physicians, hospital administrators, and attorneys, he provides them with practical advice to ensure their success. As such, Dr. Brown identifies underlying issues and offers opinions and tips on legal strategy. He also advises on interactions with medical experts and administrative steps for hospitals, nursing homes or other practices and serves as an expert witness for old cases.
Having spent over 45 years dedicated to his profession, Dr. Brown held various key positions. He was the chief executive officer for a hospital planning rescue company and served in the same capacity for Quality Health International and several other organizations. He also served as the chief psychiatric consultant for Connecticut’s Department of Children and Youth Services and taught as a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and in the school of social work at the University of Connecticut. Among other noteworthy roles, Dr. Brown was an of counsel at Davis, Saperstein & Salomon PC in Teaneck, New Jersey, and Manhattan, New York, and co-founded and served as the medical director of Cogent Systems Inc.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Brown received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, with high distinction, from the University of Rochester in 1967, a Master of Public Health in business administration and management from the University of California Berkeley in 1971, and a Doctor of Medicine in neurobiology and behavior from Stanford University in 1973. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Yale University in 1976, shortly before completing his psychiatry and behavioral medicine residency on campus in 1977. Dr. Brown has been admitted to practice by the Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Florida Bar Associations.
Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Brown has become affiliated with numerous industry-leading organizations relating to medicine, including as a life fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Association, as a fellow of the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, and as a member of the American Neuropsychiatric Association, the North American Brain Injury Society and the American Psychiatric Association. He has also been active with legal organizations like the New Jersey and New York State Bar Associations. Additionally, Dr. Brown has served in various leading roles with the Tri-County Psychiatric Society, the International Health Network Society and the New York State Bar Association, among others.
Active civically, Dr. Brown devotes much of his time to volunteer opportunities. He spent 10 years on the board of directors for the public service group of the New Jersey Community Health Club Project. He has also volunteered with the Diabetes Association in New Jersey and the New York City Emergency Response Team and was recognized as the only male to hold an office on the executive committee of the Unity Group, an organization for battered women in New Jersey. Most notably, Dr. Brown enjoyed a 20-year tenure as a volunteer faculty member at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he taught as a clinical professor of psychiatry without compensation.
As a seasoned expert, Dr. Brown has authored approximately 200 peer-reviewed articles and books and has presented numerous times. He also co-authored “Litigating Brain Injuries” via AAJ Press between 2023 and 2024.
During his college studies, Dr. Brown received numerous fellowships. He was also honored with the Bennett Prize in Political Science from the University of California Berkley and, during his psychiatry residency, received the Seymour Lustman Research Award from Yale University’s medical school.
In the future, Dr. Brown plans to continue his consulting venture, working with lawyers, doctors and health care providers interested in his expertise. He also seeks to serve as an advisory board member to several health corporations or insurance companies.
