With two decades of experience, Dr. McIntire has established a successful career in finance, specializing in banking and transaction cost analysis. He served as director of quantitative analysis at Citigroup Inc. from 2021 until his retirement in 2023, where he managed a team and an IT department accountable for critical operations. In this role, he assisted individuals in making informed financial decisions and led the development of several innovative models. He was also responsible for creating a dynamic intra-day and closing-auction volume estimation model, designed as a replacement for the global volume estimation model. He also developed a signal based on news events to enhance downstream systems, including algorithmic processes, and worked on model risk management documentation for these tools. Additionally, he established a robust research infrastructure to streamline the product development lifecycle, from concept to model validation, facilitating greater efficiency and precision.
Dr. McIntire’s extensive career also includes leadership roles as director and senior strategist at Bank of America Corporation from 2014 to 2021, director and U.S. head of BECS at Citigroup Inc. from 2010 to 2014, and director and head of quantitative development at Lighthouse Financial Group LLC from 2009 to 2010. Prior to these roles, he was vice president at JP Morgan Chase & Co. from 2008 to 2009 and associate director at Bear Stearns, now JP Morgan Chase & Co., from 2007 to 2008. Earlier in his career, he worked as a research analyst at ITG, Inc. from 2004 to 2007, mathematical consultant at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals from 2002 to 2003, and software engineer at Curl Corporation from 2000 to 2002 and Intersystems Inc. from 1999 to 2000. He also held the position of senior software engineer at Chrysalis Symbolic Design from 1996 to 1999 and began his career as an analyst at Sonalysts Inc. from 1993 to 1995 and Applied Mathematics Inc. in 1992.
Laying a strong educational foundation, Dr. McIntire earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with honors from the University of British Columbia in 1980, a Master of Science in applied mathematics from Brown University in 1981, and a PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University in 1985. He also holds Series 7 and Series 63 certifications from FINRA. He is driven by a deep curiosity and a genuine desire to understand how things work. For him, formal coursework is just the starting point, as he actively pursues additional knowledge and conducts thorough investigations to gain deeper insights.
Reflecting on his path, Dr. McIntire takes great pride in his work at Citigroup, where he successfully navigated a highly complex trade with specific customer requirements. The trade presented significant challenges, with several firms, including Citi, struggling to find a feasible approach. He took the lead in developing a viable strategy, meticulously addressing constraints and adhering to intricate rules within a portfolio of portfolios. He attributes his success to maintaining an unwavering focus on his tasks and finding purpose in solving challenging problems. Looking to the future, he plans to shift his focus toward mathematical education, driven by his passion for sharing knowledge. His advice to others is to concentrate on their craft and find joy in it, as this mindset helps navigate challenges and sustain motivation during difficult times.
