Michael P. Rutland, Washington State membership director at the Washington State Knights of Columbus, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance.
After a long and successful career in finance, engineering and management, Mr. Rutland retired from his full-time career. Today, he focuses on civic involvement through his extensive efforts with the Washington State Knights of Columbus, where he has been active for four decades.
Having begun his career with The Boeing Company, Mr. Rutland was a training manager on the F-22 from 1998 to 2002. He transitioned into technical lead engineer and project manager between 2002 and 2016. His success and tenure working on the F-22 at the American multinational aviation designer and manufacturer was due, in part, to his extensive military background as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Rutland served in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years between 1974 and 1998, serving as an aircraft armament systems manager for the F-22 before retiring as a senior master sergeant. Inspired by family members who had served in the U.S. Navy, including his father and several uncles, his experience taught him the importance of hard work, perseverance and discipline.
Following high school, Mr. Rutland received an Associate of Science in aircraft armament systems technology from the Community College of the Air Force, an Associate of Arts from Central Texas College and a Bachelor of Science in management, summa cum laude, from the University of Phoenix. In addition to his formal education, he received various diverse credentials, including a master certification in applied project management from Villanova University, designation as a fraternal insurance counselor and fraternal insurance counselor fellow through Kaplan University, and designation as a life underwriting training council fellow through the College for Financial Planning.
Mr. Rutland’s career success has been influenced by his professional memberships in the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. These organizations have been instrumental in his ability to learn, network and grow.
Now focusing his free time on various civic interests, namely the Washington State Knights of Columbus, Mr. Rutland has been serving as the state’s membership director since 2021 after serving as a field agent from 2016 to 2023. As the director, he has 75 jurisdictions under his supervision, each responsible for recruitment. His tenure has notably led the state to achieve the Supreme Knight Circle of Honor for four consecutive years. Among other positions during his 40 years with the Catholic fraternal organization, Mr. Rutland served as a district deputy, faithful navigator and grand knight. He has also had the opportunity to engage in many worthy causes through the Knights of Columbus, including Coats for Kids and the Special Olympics.
Mr. Rutland’s lifelong success has been recognized through numerous accolades, beginning with his time in the military, where he was decorated with two Meritorious Service Medals, four Commendation Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, an Achievement Medal and recognition with a Senior in the Field of the Year by the U.S. Air Force. The Boeing Company also praised his work with a Sustained Performance Quality Pride Award. Moreover, his extensive work with the Knights of Columbus earned him a Highest Award and a Director of the Year.
Attributing his success to his determination, Mr. Rutland has always remained committed to every position he has accepted, regardless of how challenging it has been. In the future, he intends to continue his directorial role with the Knights of Columbus before acquiring someone to eventually take over his position.
