Dr. Clapp, a leading consultant and the owner and president of GECCOM LLC in Saint Joseph, Missouri, has been serving clients since 2014. Leveraging many years of expertise in building small businesses in a regulated environment and working in various pharmaceutical-derived fields, he has become sought-after. Since launching GECCOM, Dr. Clapp has been instrumental in providing guidelines, such as good manufacturing processes and good laboratory practices, regarding manufacturing and organizational processes and conditions of such laboratories, as well as Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration-certified laboratory requirements.
Beginning his remarkable career at Hauser Laboratories as a director of chemistry services in 1992, Dr. Clapp subsequently joined Oread Laboratories as the vice president of pharmaceutical chemistry between 1999 and 2000. He was then recruited by AAIPharma Services Corporation (now Alcami) as the vice president of the pharmaceutical manufacturing company from 2000 to 2005.
After initially focusing his career on environmental health and pharmaceuticals, Dr. Clapp pivoted again into higher education when he was hired as the president and chief executive officer of Missouri Western State University between 2006 and 2012. Subsequently, he taught on campus as an adjunct professor of chemistry from 2008 to 2013. He also garnered success in other capacities, including as the director of workforce development between 2015 and 2020, as an associate professor and director of grants and workforce development at the university’s Western Institute from 2015 to 2022, as an associate professor in the department of chemistry between 2017 and 2022, as the director of the Center for Service from 2020 and 2021, and as the director of the incubator at the Institute for Industrial and Applied Life Sciences between 2021 and 2022.
After graduating from Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota, in 1974, Dr. Clapp received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Minnesota State University in Mankato in 1985, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in physical organic chemistry from Oregon State University in Oregon City in 1990. Beyond his formal education, he received several professional qualifications, including as a certified MT 1 instructor from The Manufacturing Skills Institute and certification as a pesticide applicator through the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
As part of his continued commitments to his field, Dr. Clapp remains active in his professional community as a treasurer of the KC section and section officer of the American Chemical Society since 1985 and 1999, respectively. As a respected figure in his field, he also co-authored “The Photochemistry of Methyl Gernate: A Model Chromophore for Insect Juvenile Hormone Analogs” in 1988.
Among many other accomplishments, Dr. Clapp secured over five U.S. patents at Krititek, where he developed small particles used in drug development, specifically sub-micron and nanoscale materials. During his tenure at Hauser Chemical Research, he was pivotal in developing Tax to Tactile, which was sold to Bristol Myers Squibb through the National Cancer Institute. In 2010, Dr. Clapp was recognized by the governor for his role in preparing the workforce for higher education and employment by organizing My Success Event Day at the Civic Center in Saint Joseph, which brought 10th graders from over 15 area high schools and numerous employers to the event. He was formally recognized for contributing to the American Chemical Society with a Volunteer of the Year award in 2018. Attributing much of his success to the support of his wife throughout the years, Dr. Clapp also notes the importance of always treating others with respect and fairness.
