Having dedicated more than 25 years to his career in economic consulting and litigation support, Dr. Stephenson has established himself as a leading authority in economic damages, litigation consulting and labor statistics. Since 2022, he has served as a managing principal of Stephenson-Economics, LLC. In this capacity, Dr. Stephenson evaluates lost wages and lifetime income in personal injury cases as well as lost profits in commercial disputes. His client base includes both plaintiff and defense counsel across the United States, and he has earned widespread praise for distilling complex economic concepts into actionable insights for attorneys involved in civil litigation.
Before his current role, Dr. Stephenson was a managing principal at Litigation Economics, LLC, from 2003 to 2022. During this period, he provided expert analysis on economic damages for a broad spectrum of legal clients nationwide. From 1996 to 2003, he served as regional commissioner for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the San Francisco Region. There, Dr. Stephenson managed a large team of professional economists responsible for collecting and analyzing data related to wages, employment and inflation across an eight-state area.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Stephenson was a managing director at Management & Strategy Analysis, Inc., in New York City from 1994 to 1995. In this position, he led a team providing economic consulting and expert witness services to legal clients and strategy consulting to corporate clients. Between 1986 and 1993, Dr. Stephenson held several management roles at Aetna Life & Casualty, Inc., culminating in the position of assistant vice president at Aetna International Inc., where his responsibilities included strategic planning and business development.
Apart from his work in the field, Dr. Stephenson has made an impact in academia, having taught as an associate professor of economics and business administration at the University of Hartford from 1984 to 1986. He taught graduate-level courses in economics, statistics and human resource management. Earlier, Dr. Stephenson was a faculty member at The Pennsylvania State University, where he was an associate professor of business administration and economics from 1976 to 1984 and served as the director of the Center for Human Resources Research on campus between 1982 and 1984.
Highly educated, Dr. Stephenson’s academic background has provided a solid foundation for his professional achievements. He received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, in 1965, followed by both a Master of Arts in economics in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1973 from Indiana University Bloomington. He was also a Brookings Economic Policy Fellow from 1975 to 1976. Dr. Stephenson’s credentials are further supported by an Indiana teaching license.
Dr. Stephenson’s professional affiliations reflect his standing within the industry. He is an active member of the National Association of Forensic Economists, contributes to the IP valuation standards committee within the Licensing Executives Society and participates in the intellectual property law section of the American Bar Association.
Civically, Dr. Stephenson holds membership with the Chivas Iron Society, is a member of Temple Israel, and recently joined a church choir in West Palm Beach, Florida. Earlier, he volunteered with the American Peace Corps in India from 1965 to 1967, a formative experience that shaped his global perspective on economics and human development. Dr. Stephenson also served as the board chair of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Center County and the federal executive board for the San Francisco Bay Area.
Dr. Stephenson is a prolific author with more than 45 articles, technical reports and books published over the course of his career. Noteworthy among these are “Determining Economic Damages,” released via James Publishing, as well as articles published in Business Valuation Update, the Journal of Business Valuation and Economic Loss Analysis, and the Journal of Legal Economics. Dr. Stephenson’s contributions have become essential resources for practitioners navigating the complexities of economic damages.
Throughout his career, Dr. Stephenson’s expertise has been sought after in high-profile cases involving patent infringement and personal injury litigation. One particularly memorable case involved a fertility clinic mix-up in San Francisco that resulted in a complex legal battle over parental rights. The experience not only challenged prevailing definitions of motherhood but also required Dr. Stephenson’s skills in quantifying damages under extraordinary circumstances.
