Mr. Schulenburg has made significant contributions to the intersection of academia and open-access knowledge platforms. As the executive director of the Wiki Education Foundation since 2014, he has been instrumental in fostering a substantial cultural shift that has brought Wikipedia and the academic world closer together, a movement that began in 2010 and continues to this day. Mr. Schulenburg’s leadership at the foundation underscores his commitment to enhancing educational experiences through accessible knowledge.

Previously affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation at the organization’s headquarters in San Francisco, Mr. Schulenburg served as the senior director of programs from 2012 to 2014. In this capacity, he oversaw various initiatives to expand Wikipedia’s reach and impact. He also served as an executive team member, reporting directly to Wikimedia’s executive director. Before this, Mr. Schulenburg was the global education program director between 2011 and 2012, where he played a pivotal role in numerous initiatives, such as addressing online gender imbalance, expanding into the Arab world, and establishing online and offline learning materials.

From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Schulenburg was the head of public outreach at the Wikimedia Foundation. His efforts during this period were focused on increasing public engagement with Wikipedia and promoting its use as a reliable educational resource. Earlier in his career, Mr. Schulenburg was the vice chair and a board member of Wikimedia Deutschland e.V., the German chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, where he contributed to its early years by hiring and managing its first chief executive officer and expanding on some of its key programs and partnerships.

Mr. Schulenburg’s professional journey began in academia as a research and teaching assistant at the Institute of Economic and Social History at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 2000 to 2002. During this time, he contributed numerous scientific journal articles and presented research based on his studies. Mr. Schulenburg later transitioned into software development with DFG’s Archive Anglo-American History (AAAH) and Clio Online at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin between 2002 and 2005. He designed and developed software and implemented the second version of the Virtual Library of Anglo-American Culture and History website, among other accomplishments.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Schulenburg is actively involved in civic organizations. He has volunteered with Project Coyote since 2016 and has been a member of the Rotary Club of Chico since 2021. Previously, he served on the board of advisors for the Human Rights Data Analysis Group from 2016 to 2020.

Mr. Schulenburg’s contributions extend to creative projects and publications. He has been a contributor to Wikimedia Commons and an author for Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, since 2005. These endeavors reflect his belief that access to knowledge is a fundamental human right that everyone should be able to enjoy.

In light of his success in the classroom, Mr. Schulenburg was recognized with an Excellence in Education Award from the Global Forum of Education and Learning in 2021. Looking ahead, he aims to significantly improve the learning experience for students in the United States and around the globe.
