His tenure at Amazon saw him rise through the ranks to become a software development engineer II between 2015 and 2017, ML learning engineer in 2018, and senior software development engineer for ML from 2018 to 2020. During this period, Mr. Karmakar was instrumental in developing voice-based features for Amazon Alexa and implementing ML techniques to detect fraudulent or misclassified items.
In 2020, Mr. Karmakar transitioned to Zillow as a senior ML engineer. His expertise in natural language processing and recommendation systems led to his promotion as principal machine learning engineer in 2022. At Zillow, Mr. Karmakar spearheaded the development of an innovative search engine for real estate that empowered users with advanced search capabilities. This project garnered recognition from company leaders and set a new standard in the industry. Mr. Karmakar thoroughly enjoyed working with a talented team to make it a success.
Mr. Karmakar’s academic foundation included completing a Bachelor of Technology in information technology from RCC Institute of Information Technology in his home country of India in 2009 and a Master of Science in computer science from the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, in 2013. These academic achievements have been instrumental in his professional success, providing him with the technical knowledge and analytical skills necessary to excel in his field.
Among his many other accomplishments, Mr. Karmakar secured several U.S. patents on natural language search and generative AI-based chatbots developed at Zillow. One patent involved a multi-region parser that used a unique algorithm to break down overlapping queries into geographical components, while another related to detecting points of interest using curated datasets, including data from Foursquare.
