Currently excelling as the vice president of operations at Metropolitan Solutions Group Inc., he has been instrumental in optimizing processes and strategic planning, drawing from his extensive knowledge of business management. His exceptional leadership extends to his position as president of DuBrul Maritime Group LLC, a tribute to his mentor Don DuBrul, which he established in 2019. Additionally, he has found success as a naval ship repair consultant for Coleman Research, showcasing his wealth of expertise in maritime operations.
Prior to embarking on his civilian career, Mr. Coughlin dedicated more than 30 years of service to the U.S. Navy, advancing through the ranks to become the commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron TWO and the U.S.S. Bainbridge (DDG-96) between 1981 and 2015. He became additionally distinguished in the military during his time as the commander of the Navy Regional Maintenance Center with the McKean Defense Group from 2015 to 2016.
Upon his departure from the U.S. Navy, Mr. Coughlin accepted a position as a national ship maintenance planning manager with Q.E.D. Systems from 2016 to 2021. During this time, he was likewise appointed by Q.E.D. as the deputy director of engineering services between 2019 and 2021. Before his current post with Metropolitan Solutions Group Inc., Mr. Coughlin worked as the director for maintenance, repair and overhaul at Defense Maritime Solutions from 2021 to 2024.
Mr. Coughlin’s educational background has been foundational to his success. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences and marine engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1998. He later continued his studies with a master’s degree in foreign affairs from the U.S. Naval War College in 2001. Complementing these degrees are certifications such as professional writer from the American Writers & Artists Institute and joint service officer from the National Defense University.
Mr. Coughlin’s commitment to professional development is evident through his participation in numerous industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Virginia Ship Repair Association. His contributions extend beyond his professional life; he is actively involved with civic-minded organizations such as Tunnels to Towers and Wounded Warriors, reflecting his dedication to community service.
Throughout his career, Mr. Coughlin has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Legion of Merit and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, underscoring his exceptional service and leadership. His publications in the United States Naval Institute Proceedings demonstrate his thought leadership on naval operations and strategy.
In his personal time, Mr. Coughlin enjoys playing golf, reading about history, business and science, and bonding with his grandchildren.
