Dennis P. Dougherty, MBA, managing director of DPDOUGHERTY LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in consulting, international management and executive leadership development.
Drawing on 45 years of professional expertise, Mr. Dougherty has served as managing director of his own firm, DPDOUGHERTY LLC., since 2008. As an esteemed consultant with well-developed skills in leadership coaching, he regularly consults with a wide range of business clients. As part of his offered services, Mr. Dougherty sometimes joins a company for longer stretches, taking on such roles as business operations consultant for Maine Pointe in 2018, senior manager of enterprise excellence for Catalyft in 2018, and senior director of business consulting and North America sector lead for communications, media, information and entertainment at Virtusa in 2014. He has also served as interim chief executive officer of two early-stage tech companies facing significant transitional challenges during critical growth periods.
Dedicated to teaching others as well, Mr. Dougherty has contributed as a faculty lecturer at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business in Knoxville since 2018. At this institution, he initially assisted with the Graduate Executive Education Department’s Executive MBA Program (EMBA), where he conducted leadership assessments and leadership coaching for EMBA candidates. In addition, he later joined the Management and Entrepreneurship Department focused on undergraduate business management courses. He also offered his time as a motorcycle safety instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at Northern Illinois University from 2008 to 2016.
Prior to founding DPDOUGHERTY LLC., Mr. Dougherty gained experience as the senior principal of global consulting services at PRTM, an international management consulting group that later merged with PricewaterhouseCoopers. His earlier positions include principal of global management consulting services at Capgemini from 1992 to 1999 and managing director of the Paragon Group from 1990 to 1992. Mr. Dougherty established his career in the telecommunications industry, joining Sprint as a group marketing manager in 1980 and AT&T as a senior director and division manager of technology strategy in 1988. He played a significant part in early product development at Sprint, helping to launch the first-ever products under the brand.
Before embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Dougherty set a strong foundation in his education. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics from Regis University in 1975. Subsequently, Mr. Dougherty earned a Master of Business Administration in finance and executive management from Rockhurst University in 1982. He graduated from St. Louis University High School, a Jesuit institution, in 1971.
Devoted to lifelong learning, Mr. Dougherty has continued to build his skills beyond his academic career. He is certified in bareboat and advanced blue water sailing from Sailboats Inc., Life Orientations personality assessment, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator from The Myers-Briggs Company and breakthrough coaching from WBECS Breakthrough Coaching. He has also completed training as a private pilot with both instrument and seaplane ratings from the Federal Aviation Administration, a motorcycle safety instructor from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and a master scuba diver and rescue diver from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
A volunteer within his local community, Mr. Dougherty has participated in fundraising for the Tellico Village Volunteer Fire Department. He has donated his time as a member of the men’s health task force for the American Cancer Society, as a respite provider for Smoky Mountain Service Dogs serving disabled veterans, and part of the legal advocacy task force for the East Tennessee chapter of the International Coaching Federation. Additionally, Mr. Dougherty has contributed as the vice president of programs for the Homeowners Association of Tellico Village.
When he is not working, Mr. Dougherty finds pleasure in flying, riding motorcycles, scuba diving and taking part in a variety of volunteer activities. He is committed to carrying on his work in leadership development, especially through the EMBA program at the University of Tennessee, conducting leadership assessments and leadership coaching for EMBA candidates. Furthermore, Mr. Dougherty hopes to maintain his reputation for establishing strong relationships with his clients by building and facilitating ongoing trust. Though he has scaled back from a full-time workload, he has no plans for total retirement in the near future, often joking that he may never retire due to his unending drive to help others and stay connected to the business world.
