Title: Information Technology Consultant
Company: UCI Health
Location: Anaheim, California, United States
Mark Castillo, information technology consultant at UCI Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in information technology (IT), health care and construction.
Despite having to overcome significant hurdles in his life, Mr. Castillo has successfully built an esteemed career across the last 35 years. At the age of 25, he suffered an aneurysm affecting his spinal cord that left him paralyzed. Though his life was altered forever by this experience, Mr. Castillo adapted and became an IT security specialist with the Orange County Sanitation District. Working in this position for nearly 15 years, he helped design and implement automation systems for wastewater management plants and a communication system utilizing fiber optics between two tents, among other accomplishments.
After leaving the Orange County Sanitation District in 2004, Mr. Castillo pursued a new opportunity as a senior lead project manager for Kaiser Permanente. He initially oversaw the construction of the company’s Irvine Medical Center, designing and managing all IT-related equipment for the project. Recognized for his strong leadership, Mr. Castillo remained associated with Kaiser Permanente through 2016, taking on the roles of lead project manager for the construction of the Anaheim Medical Center and consultant specialist for the construction of the San Diego Medical Center. One of his major accomplishments at Kaiser Permanente was pushing for greater patient safety through the implementation of more cameras, including inside patient rooms. Under Mr. Castillo’s guidance, 300 cameras were installed in the San Diego Medical Center. He later contributed as an IT health care technology and innovations leader with DPB Engineers Inc., an IT systems and integration design leader with vScenario, and an IT senior project manager of transformative technology with Providence St. Joseph Health.
Since 2021, Mr. Castillo has served as an IT consultant with the information services project management office of UCI Health, the hospital system associated with the University of California, Irvine. Utilizing his expertise in construction projects, he oversees the integration of infrastructure systems into new developments, including security systems, parking structures and solar energy technology. Mr. Castillo is also responsible for the design and implementation of advanced fire safety systems, ensuring the safety of the hospital. He devotes time to mentoring younger professionals as well, to aid them in skill development.
One of the most noteworthy elements of Mr. Castillo’s professional success is that he has very little traditional education. He earned his high school diploma from Sweetwater High School. Following that, Mr. Castille completed some coursework in computer systems networking and telecommunications at Golden West College. However, the vast majority of his skills have been developed through on-the-job learning over the course of his decades of work.
Outside of his career, Mr. Castillo is a loving husband, father to one and grandfather to two. He fills his free time with travel, deep-sea fishing, supporting his local church and acting as a motivational speaker on behalf of people with disabilities. Mr. Castillo is committed to his work with UCI Health for the foreseeable future and hopes to continue working with them on new hospital construction while offering mentorship to others in the company. Though he considers himself semi-retired, he’s also open to other opportunities, prioritizing flexibility over rigid goals.
