Michelle Marie Williams Guzman, accounting deputy controller at First National Bank Texas, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in banking.
Inspired by a lecture on banking from one of her college professors, Ms. Guzman began a career of more than 25 years in the field. She joined First National Bank Texas in 1999 as senior vice president. At that point in time, the organization had just over $300 million in assets. Under Ms. Guzman’s guidance and leadership, the bank has grown and expanded to the point that it now deals with nearly $4.5 billion in assets. In recognition of her contributions, she was promoted to accounting deputy controller in 2018.
As a leading executive at First National Bank Texas, Ms. Guzman’s responsibilities include overseeing all financial, managerial and regulatory reporting for the company. She supervises six staff accountants and three officers in the accounting department alongside multiple other departments, including accounts payable and central travel. Ms. Guzman also shares her expertise as a member on committees and collaborates with external auditors multiple times per year. Her lengthy tenure at the bank has given her extensive knowledge of every department and thus the ability to work together with all of her colleagues.
Backing up Ms. Guzman’s many accomplishments throughout her time at First National Bank Texas has been her ability to adapt and grow throughout numerous challenges and changes. She has aided the company as it has significantly expanded and worked through updates to government regulations. Ms. Guzman notes the specific difficulties of guiding a bank through the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. She takes pride in how the organization has persevered across these many tough situations, only becoming more successful as a result.
Before venturing onto her vocational path, Ms. Guzman sought an academic foundation for her future. She obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration from Sam Houston State University in 1998. Subsequently, she earned an Executive Master of Business Administration in banking and financial support services from the same institution in 2024. She considers earning that MBA while balancing her career and raising her son to be one of the highlights of her career, especially as she managed to excel in her education with almost entirely A grades. Another notable achievement for Ms. Guzman was obtaining her certified public accountant license through the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy in 2009. With this accomplishment, she became one of only three certified public accountants at First National Bank Texas.
Noted for all she has done in the field, Ms. Guzman has received numerous accolades throughout her professional life. In 2024, she was presented with the Southwest Business Corporation (SWBC) Foundation Award by the Texas Business Hall of Fame, a major honor in the region. Ms. Guzman is associated with several industry-related organizations. She maintains membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
In addition to her career, Ms. Guzman is a loving mother to her 12-year-old son, Alexander Lucas. When she’s not working, she stays active with boxing and practicing tae kwon do. Ambitious in her vision for the future, Ms. Guzman aims to leverage her expertise by becoming the chief financial officer of a bank, whether that’s her current institution or a smaller bank where she can learn and grow in this capacity. She also intends to support First National Bank Texas in its goal of reaching $7 billion in assets. Ms. Guzman is also eager to embrace opportunities for teaching accounting and banking, alongside other chances to share her knowledge with others.
