Mr. Ghanekar, a telecommunications investor and expert, currently serves as the co-founder, co-chief executive officer and managing partner at Generate-Ubiquity Management LLC in Kansas, a position he has held since 2019. In this capacity, he leads all business operations, oversees strategic planning for the company’s direction, and secures capital through both equity and debt financing. His responsibilities include developing comprehensive business plans for fiber network deployment, executing build plans to bring fiber networks to communities, ensuring optimal network operational performance and monetizing these networks through internet service provider operations. Additionally, Mr. Ghanekar drives revenue growth, manages profitability and runs subsidiary ISP Fiber First operations across multiple markets.
A defining milestone in Mr. Ghanekar’s career has been the founding of Ubiquity. When he established the company in 2019, the initial goal was to deploy approximately $100 million in capital to bridge gaps in internet connectivity in underserved suburban areas through open-access fiber networks. Under his leadership, Ubiquity has secured nearly $1 billion in invested capital since its inception. This achievement reflects not only financial success but also a three-dimensional impact: improving communities by providing high-speed connectivity to households and businesses, creating generational infrastructure with a projected usable life of 30 to 50 years, and generating hundreds of jobs through infrastructure investment. Mr. Ghanekar regards this accomplishment as a significant personal milestone, having left a promising corporate career at Verizon in his early 40s to pursue entrepreneurial risk and make a tangible difference in communities.
Mr. Ghanekar retired from Verizon in 2018 as the executive director of engineering and system performance in Kansas City, Missouri. In this position, he oversaw engineering initiatives and ensured optimal system performance across the eastern half of the U.S., including the Great Lakes, the Northeast, and the Southeast. From 2015 to 2017, Mr. Ghanekar was the executive director of network system performance at Verizon in Kansas City. During this period, he managed large-scale network performance projects and played a key role in maintaining high service reliability standards in the Great Lakes and Northeast markets.
In the preceding year, from 2014 to 2015, Mr. Ghanekar excelled as the executive director of network at Verizon in the Michigan area, where he directed network design, deployment and operations, and contributed to strategic planning efforts that supported the company’s growth objectives in the Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky regions. He also held the titles of director of network engineering at Verizon, director of network system performance, and manager of system performance in the Houston Gulf Coast area, dating back to 2009.
Before joining Verizon, Mr. Ghanekar was employed by Sprint Nextel Communications (now T-Mobile USA Inc.) from 2005 to 2009 as a radio frequency (RF) engineering manager, leading RF engineering teams to enhance wireless coverage and capacity. He was promoted to this position after initially working for the organization as a senior RF engineer between 2003 and 2005.
Mr. Ghanekar’s earlier experience included serving as a senior manager of corporate network at Tata Teleservices Ltd., part of the Tata Group of Companies, in India, from 2002 to 2003. He also worked as a senior consultant at Marconi Wireless (now Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson) between 2000 and 2002. Mr. Ghanekar began his professional journey as the deputy manager at BPL Mobile (GSM) from 1995 to 2000, where he gained foundational experience in mobile telecommunications management.
Mr. Ghanekar’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering and a master’s degree in financial management from the University of Mumbai, completed in 1995 and 2000, respectively. His education provided him with a strong foundation in both technical and financial disciplines, skills that have been instrumental throughout his career.
Throughout his career, Mr. Ghanekar has been recognized for both technical expertise and leadership acumen. Most notably, during his years with Sprint, he received top-level recognition from the chief executive officer for outstanding contributions, a distinction known as Top Dog Recognition.
Mr. Ghanekar attributes his professional success to an unwavering commitment to excellence, never settling for mediocrity, and always seeking new challenges rather than titles or positions. This philosophy has guided his decisions throughout his three-decade career in telecommunications. Mr. Ghanekar also credits his ability to manage large-scale capital budgets, a skill honed during his tenure at Verizon, as critical to his achievements. Honesty and integrity are also core values that were instilled by his parents and have shaped his approach to leadership and decision-making.
