Melissa Hallowell, Founder and Lead Designer at MDH Designs LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Residential Interior Design.
Ms. Hallowell has established herself as a leading expert in residential design, demonstrating a commitment to creating environments that reflect the individuality of her clients. As the founder and lead designer of MDH Designs LLC since 2012, she has guided the company with a philosophy centered on attentive listening and understanding each client’s daily life, family dynamics and personal preferences.
In her role, Ms. Hallowell manages all aspects of client engagement, from initial meetings and creative direction to invoicing and ongoing communication. Her approach rejects imposing a signature style, instead focusing on developing spaces that embody her clients’ personalities, relationships and lived experiences. During her tenure at MDH Designs LLC, Ms. Hallowell has developed a significant portfolio, including an exceptional residential project in Costa Rica, which stands as one of her most significant professional accomplishments.
From 2015 to 2017, Ms. Hallowell served as a designer specialist at Volpe Tile, where she expanded her expertise in material selection and client consultation. Between 2012 and 2015, she held the position of customer service manager at Yarrington Mills Inc., overseeing client relations and ensuring high standards of service delivery. Earlier, Ms. Hallowell contributed as an interior design consultant at Kaplan’s Furniture from 2012 to 2013, providing tailored solutions for residential interiors.
Before these roles, Ms. Hallowell was an interior designer at Dashing Designs Inc. from 2008 to 2012. In this capacity, she managed comprehensive design projects and honed her skills in project management and creative problem-solving. In 2007, she held two positions. She was a design manager at Busybee Design and an interior designer at Alexander Perry, Inc., where she led teams and executed high-end residential projects. Ms. Hallowell’s foundational roles included design positions at Malvern Design Workshop, LeMontage Interior Design, Inc., and Taylor & Taylor Designs, dating back to 2001.
Ms. Hallowell’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design with a minor in art history from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, graduating in 2001. Her formal training in color theory has been instrumental in shaping her creative process. Ms. Hallowell emphasizes the importance of analyzing how light interacts with color and how color influences human perception and behavior, principles that guide her thoughtful approach to every project.
Beyond her professional practice, Ms. Hallowell has been active with professional and charitable organizations, including Business Women Networking Involving Charity & Education (BW NICE). BW NICE is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for women at all stages of their careers.
Ms. Hallowell’s decision to pursue interior design was influenced by a family deeply rooted in construction and engineering. Her father is a civil engineer, her uncle is a forensic engineer, and her grandfather was a homebuilder. Growing up, Ms. Hallowell participated in construction projects, such as building her family’s house and vacation home, and completing drafting work for her father. Meanwhile, her mother’s passion for furniture restoration provided additional artistic inspiration. These formative experiences led Ms. Hallowell to seek a career that combined artistic interests with professional discipline.
Among her accolades, Ms. Hallowell’s work was featured in House & Home magazine, highlighting her influence within the field. She was also nominated for Best of Bucks County, a testament to both peer recognition and public appreciation for her contributions to residential design within her region. However, Ms. Hallowell considers the respect she has earned from peers to be the most meaningful to her. Her recognition within the design community continues to grow, further establishing her reputation for excellence.
Choosing to pivot by establishing her own business as the founder of MDH Designs LLC, Ms. Hallowell realized the challenges faced by designers that lacked adequate support staff, reinforcing her desire to develop an independent identity within the industry. Looking ahead, she intends to remain fully engaged in advancing MDH Designs LLC by broadening its reach and elevating its capabilities to undertake more complex and higher-end projects.
