John K. Marshall, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at The DrillMaster, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Military Drill Ceremonies.

Attributing more than four decades to his distinguished career, Mr. Marshall has become an eminent authority in military drilling ceremonies. As the founder and chief executive officer of The DrillMaster since 2008, he has been traveling nationwide to instruct cadets in military drill, ceremonies and leadership across various programs, including scouts. Mr. Marshall’s expertise extends to providing funeral honors instruction for military units and first responders, such as police, fire and emergency medical services personnel.

Mr. Marshall’s professional journey began in 1979 when he first marched as a high school cadet in Arizona. By 1986, he had transitioned into teaching, marking the start of his instructional career. He further advanced his impact on the field by founding the Institute for Ceremonial Standards. This organization studies and promotes standards in ceremonial practices and offers certifications and continuing education opportunities for ceremonial guardsmen and honor guard personnel. Under Mr. Marshall’s direction, the institute collaborates with leading experts, including a retired U.S. Air Force bugler from Arlington National Cemetery, a former U.S. Marine Corps drum major for The President’s Own Band, a vexillologist specializing in flag studies and a retired U.S. Air Force protocol officer.

Having garnered influence internationally, Mr. Marshall taught American exhibition drill to Qatari Police College and Police Training Institute personnel on two separate occasions, imparting principles and performance standards of American-style exhibition drill. His work has also included scheduled training in Kuwait for similar purposes.

In addition to his primary roles at The DrillMaster and the Institute for Ceremonial Standards, Mr. Marshall has served as the director of education for the World Drill Association since 2008. He was previously a drill master and dining facility manager with the U.S. Army Cadet Corps Inc. in Millersburg, Kentucky, from 2013 to 2014. Mr. Marshall’s earlier experience included serving as the visual caption head with Jong Leven Bazuinenkorps/Trumpet Corps between 1995 and 1998 and again from 2010 to 2011.

Mr. Marshall’s instructional roles included marching instructor and drill writer at Vanden High School from 2005 to 2007. Internationally recognized for his judging expertise, he served as a visual and field percussion judge for Drum Corps Holland early on between 1993 and 1998, following his role as a percussion judge for Drum Corps United Kingdom from 1986 to 1989. Additionally, Mr. Marshall has contributed as a general effect visual judge for Color Guard Nederland.

Mr. Marshall’s military service formed the foundation of his expertise. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985 after attending New Mexico Military Institute for two years following high school in Arizona, where he participated in Air Force Junior ROTC. Serving first as a staff sergeant and reprographics specialist until 1998 before advancing to education and training manager until his retirement in 2005, Mr. Marshall completed extensive deployments throughout Europe and Asia. His experience deepened his passion for teaching while reinforcing his commitment to discipline and standards within military traditions.

In 1999, Mr. Marshall acquired an associate’s degree in training management and reprographics from the Community College of the Air Force. He also completed coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary Christian studies with an emphasis in theology at Master’s International University of Divinity. These educational achievements have provided him with both technical proficiency and pedagogical insight essential for his instructional roles. Additionally, Mr. Marshall received several professional credentials that further distinguish his expertise, including certified drillmaster and recognition as a master ceremonial guardsman by DrillMaster.

A respected member of professional organizations, Mr. Marshall has served on the international selection committee of the International Association of Exhibition Drillers since 2008. He notably served as the director of contests for the association from 2008 to 2017. Mr. Marshall’s leadership has extended into community organizations, currently as a board member of Space Force Cadet Corps since 2023.

Mr. Marshall’s commitment to education and training is evident in his authorship of numerous books in his field, as well as his prolific output of articles and educational content through digital platforms. Through DrillMaster Press, he has released numerous publications, most recently including “The Pathfinder Drill and Ceremonies Manual” in 2022, “Joint Armed Forces Color Guard Guidelines” in 2024 and “DrillMaster’s Training for Military Drill Teams, Color Guards, and Judges” in 2025. Mr. Marshall has several others forthcoming.

Recognition for his service included being named a Kentucky Colonel in 2024. Faith has played a central role in his life and work. He attributes all of his success to his faith, crediting divine guidance with making research accessible even when it proved challenging or monotonous.

Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Mr. Marshall spent much of his youth in Arizona before embarking on a lifelong pursuit of excellence within military drilling ceremonies, inspired by an early fascination at age 9 that led him through high school ROTC activities into college-level regimental leadership roles. From there, Mr. Marshall continued onward into distinguished U.S. Air Force service alongside his wife Rebecca, herself a retired U.S. Air Force major nurse.

Looking ahead, Mr. Marshall remains dedicated to completing additional books that clarify leadership principles derived from drill traditions while defining broader benefits applicable beyond military careers. His goal is to reinforce how foundational values learned through ceremonial practice can shape lives across diverse paths regardless of uniformed service.
