Bill Staab, president of West Side Runners Club (WSX), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in non-profit administration.
With 45 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Staab has excelled as president of the WSX since 1978. In 1980, he began interfacing with immigrant runners and helping them participate in races. He organizes races both in and outside of the country but focuses mainly on the New York and Washington areas. He assists runners by providing them with visas, green cards, lawyers, and asylums, especially for those coming from Ethiopia, which is currently in a state of civil war. He does not receive a salary for his work and even pays for the runners to enter races so that they can have the opportunity to compete and win prize money for themselves.
Mr. Staab worked in Liberia, West Africa, from 1963 to 1965. He served as general manager in international trading at Thyssen Incorporated, now ThyssenKrupp, for 34 years. He established himself with the United States Steel International Increase for 10 years and was active in Europe for one year.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Staab pursued an education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in history and foreign trade in 1962. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He served as the chief fundraiser for the sports fitness department at the West Side Young Men’s Christian Association for 55 years and as president of the University of Wisconsin Student Association Social Board. He contributed to the United Fund of New Jersey and the United States Peace Corps.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Staab has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was featured in the New York Times and other national and international publications. He has participated in 850 races throughout his running career and recently won a gold medal, his first in 30 years. For over 37 years, he led the leading men’s team in New York City and worked in various countries, including Brazil, Singapore, and Japan. In the immediate future, he hopes to live a long life and continue his work for the next five to 10 years.
