Previously, he was the chief economist at Wells Fargo from 2002 to 2018, a senior economist for the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee from 2001 to 2002, and the chief economist for the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee from 2000 to 2001. His earlier roles include chief economist and managing director at Scudder Investments from 1983 to 1999 and economic research officer at Harris Bank from 1982 to 1983. Mr. Silvia began his career in academia, serving as an assistant professor at Indiana University from 1979 to 1982, an economics instructor at St. Anselm’s College from 1977 to 1979, and an instructor at Northeastern University from 1976 to 1977. He also worked as an associate member of the technical staff at Mitre Corporation from 1974 to 1975. Before embarking on his professional path, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1971. He continued his academic efforts at Brown University, obtaining a Master of Arts in economics in 1973. He concluded his studies at Northeastern University, earning a PhD in economics in 1980.

Dr. Silvia’s impressive achievements have earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. He was recognized as a Fellow by the National Association of Business Economics in 2011 and received multiple awards from The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2010 for his exceptional forecasting abilities. Additionally, he was honored as one of the Top 10 Forecasters by Bloomberg News in 2009 and ranked as the Number 2 Forecaster by USA Today in 2008. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with the American Economic Association, Blue Chip Economic and Financial Surveys, the Global Interdependence Center, and the Industrial Economists Roundtable at Harvard University. He is a past president and board member of the National Association of Business Economists, a member of the National Business Economic Issues Council, and a board member of the Western Economic Association International. He has also contributed as a donor to the National WWII Museum and The Bronze Buffalo Club. He also authored “Dynamic Economic Decision Making,” published by John Wiley & Sons Inc. in 2011.

Dr. Silvia’s most notable achievement is his consistent recognition as one of the top forecasters in the Zillow house price forecasts over the past two years. Additionally, he has garnered numerous accolades for his published articles in the journal of the National Association of Business Economists.
