Esayas Lemma, Supervisory Revenue Accounting Specialist at the Child and Family Services Agency – Business Services Administration, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance.
In his role as a supervisory revenue accounting specialist with the Child and Family Services Agency – Business Services Administration, Mr. Lemma oversees the accounting unit, which manages both local and federal government funds. Federal funds represent approximately 22% of the total budget, and the compliance and reporting requirements associated with them are particularly stringent. One of his primary responsibilities is ensuring all transactions related to foster care, adoption and guardianship are accurately captured. Although his focus is on accounting, he has a comprehensive understanding of the industry to better support the work of social workers. He is also responsible for generating detailed reports for both federal and local authorities, which requires meticulous attention to detail. He reviews every transaction and makes necessary adjustments to ensure accuracy and compliance. In addition to these technical duties, he prioritizes supporting his team’s professional development.
With over ten years of management experience, Mr. Lemma emphasizes the importance of leading by example and fostering an environment of growth. Rather than merely instructing his team, he actively assists them in advancing their careers, whether within his unit or elsewhere. For his exemplary conduct as a leader, he was named Manger of the Year in 2023 and received the Outstanding Leadership Award. He attributes his success to deriving satisfaction from his work and striving for excellence. The time he has spent as a public servant has taught him that serving the community involves demonstrating authenticity and compassion. Working in the government has greatly enhanced his interpersonal skills, allowing him to better understand the needs of others, whether they are clients or colleagues.
Originally from Ethiopia, Mr. Lemma began his education at Alemaya University, now Haramaya University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics. He immigrated to England to continue his education at the University of London, where he earned a Master of Science in public policy and management in 2005. Later in his career, he pursued a Master of Science in accounting with a specialization in controllership at Strayer University, graduating in 2010. In addition to his university education, he is a certified government financial manager (CGFM) with the Association of Government Accountants, of which he is a member. He began his career as a Horn of Africa representative with Oxfam Australia, working in this capacity from 1999 to 2005. After completing a second master’s degree, he immigrated to the United States to pursue a career in accounting with Freedom House. In 2013, he joined the U.S. federal government as a supervisory tax examiner with the government of Washington, D.C. After leaving the position in 2023, he continues to be employed by the Washington, D.C., government but has transitioned to the Child and Family Services Agency division.
Over the coming years, Mr. Lemma strives to establish his own limited liability corporation (LLC) and pursue consulting work. Having initially pursued agricultural economics in Ethiopia during his youth, he is interested in returning to the subject to further his studies. He is eager to travel to the Philippines to delve into biodynamic agriculture, commonly referred to as organic farming.
