In this capacity, he specializes in appraising machinery and equipment, leading a team of 35 to 40 people. He also spends significant time training and preparing his staff, ensuring they are equipped to meet client needs and advising on the appropriate valuation strategies. His experience also includes serving as senior manager at BDO Consulting’s Valuation Services from 2017 to 2019, manager of fixed assets, valuations, and business analytics at BDO USA LLP from 2015 to 2019, and vice president at Duff & Phelps in 2015. Earlier in his career, he worked as a senior consultant in machinery and equipment valuation at American Appraisal Associates from 2013 to 2015 and as a consultant in machinery and equipment valuation at American Appraisal Associates from 2009 to 2013.
Mr. Hinz laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in economics from Illinois State University in 2003. He is also an accredited senior appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers and serves as a member of the discipline committee for machinery and technical specialties. Reflecting on his path, his career took an unexpected turn, as he initially worked at a bank but found that the role did not suit him. When an opportunity arose to perform insurance appraisals, he took it and spent a couple of years gaining valuable experience in that area. Eventually, an opening within his company appeared, and he decided to take a leap of faith, leading him to his current field. He takes great pride in the establishment of the Plante Moran group, as this opportunity gave him the autonomy to shape the group’s direction and construct a practice from the ground up.
Mr. Hinz attributes his success to collaborating with numerous competent individuals throughout his career, as well as his extensive experience across diverse industries, which has provided him with valuable insights into both domestic and international production. His work frequently takes him to various factories across multiple sectors, including shipbuilding, foundries, confectionery, and automotive manufacturing. He emphasizes the substantial contributions and innovations occurring within the U.S., not only in urban centers but also in rural communities. Looking to the future, he aims to expand his practice and reach a financial target of two to three million dollars. To achieve this, he plans to assemble a highly skilled team to ensure the long-term sustainability of the practice. He envisions his legacy as making a significant contribution to a company with a century-long history. Personally, he aspires to progress into a partner role and grow the practice, with hopes of being happy with his role and the people he works with. In advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes being more focused on people than money and growth, and to live by and work with good core values.
