Ventura, California, United States

Liz Campos, council member at City of Ventura, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in public service.

Ms. Campos has established a successful career in public service, currently excelling as a council member for the City of Ventura, a role she has held since 2022. She is dedicated to addressing issues such as climate change, environmental justice, fair civic engagement, and government transparency and accountability. She actively engages with the community, fostering connections with individuals and groups to understand their needs and priorities and proposes policies that will create positive impacts. Additionally, she has dedicated her time as a member of the advisory board for the Westside Community Council for 10 years, served as communications director for two years, and chaired the board for two years. She supports the NAMBA Performing Arts Space and The Humane Society of the United States. Laying a solid educational foundation, she completed coursework in a junior college teaching credential program, studies at UC Berkeley, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from San Francisco State University, and a master’s degree in literature with a minor in teaching English from California State University.

Reflecting on her path, Ms. Campos notes a significant case that started when a gas compressor station processing methane gas was placed across from a century-old elementary school, where many students were suffering from serious health issues, including leukemia and asthma. In response, she partnered with two community organizations to tackle the issue, initially engaging with SoCalGas before escalating the matter to the California Public Utilities Commission. Although their request for relocation was denied in 2021, she remained steadfast. After six years of advocacy, they are now nearing a decision on the potential relocation of the compressor station. She is also proud to be one of the few city council members in California who uses a wheelchair, which also allows her to advocate effectively for inclusivity and accessibility.

Ms. Campos takes great pride in several notable accomplishments throughout her career, including being elected to the board of the community council, receiving awards from the League of California Cities, earning an honorable mention as an outstanding student by USA Today while at San Francisco State University, and receiving recognitions from the Ventura Climate Coalition. She attributes her success to a transformative realization during her recovery from an injury. While spending significant time in the hospital and rehabilitation, she observed the varied ways people responded to challenges. She realized that happiness is a decision independent of circumstances, which marked a turning point in her life. As she embraced a positive mindset, she noticed a profound shift in how others interacted with her and began to attract success in many areas.

Looking to the future, Ms. Campos is optimistic about her reelection prospects and remains open to exploring future opportunities with the county supervisors or within the state legislature. She recognizes that the experience she is gaining now will provide a solid foundation for any path she chooses to pursue. In advising aspiring professionals, she underscores the value of early involvement in public service and encourages them to take action without delay.
