Glendon “Glenn” Schmitz, CISSP, chief information security officer at the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in information technology.
With nearly three decades of experience, Mr. Schmitz has established a successful career in information technology and mental health. Since 2020, he has served as chief information security officer for the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, overseeing cybersecurity and risk management across 12 state-run hospitals that provide mental health and disability care. His experience also includes assistant vice president and cybersecurity program manager at Northrim Bank from 2018 to 2020, and director of cyber defense for the United States Air Force from 2016 to 2018. Over his 23-year military career, concluding as senior master sergeant in 2018, he held several leadership positions in network operations and cybersecurity.
Laying an educational foundation, Mr. Schmitz earned an associate degree in electronic systems technology from the Community College of the Air Force and a bachelor’s degree in information technology management from Trident University International in 2018. He is also a certified information systems security professional through the International Information System Security Certification Consortium. Additionally, he dedicates his time to chairing the board of Tech for Troops, a nonprofit providing technology and training to veterans and their families while supporting suicide prevention programs. He is a member of the Virginia Substituted Planning Committee, appointed by the Governor, and serves on the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Risk and Information Security Committees. He also advises Shenandoah University’s Engineers of Leadership program and has held leadership roles with the Boy Scouts of America and ISC2 South Central Alaska Chapter.
Mr. Schmitz has also presented at the RSA Conference on artificial intelligence in cybersecurity and will address quantum computing’s impact on cybersecurity at ISC2’s Security Congress. He attributes his success to strong leadership support, cohesive teams, and his ability to translate organizational vision into actionable goals. Looking to the future, he plans to author a cybersecurity survival guide for parents, contribute his expertise to a Fortune 100 company, and continue raising awareness about cybersecurity through public speaking.
