Michael David Harris, chief financial officer of GPS Capital Markets, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executive for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance and accounting.
Mr. Harris, chief financial officer of GPS Capital Markets, a Utah-based leader in corporate foreign exchange, began his career as an intern at the sales desk. Over the next year, he learned the intricacies of selling foreign currencies to multinational companies. All these years later, Mr. Harris is at the helm of the company, where he continues to drive success and foster growth.
During his tenure at GPS Capital Markets, Mr. Harris began assisting with their CRM and at the trade desk. As he continued to progress, he earned an opportunity to work alongside the project manager on the development team before gaining experience with the accounting and finance departments for several years. By 2019, Mr. Harris had become named the director of accounting and director of finance and operations, playing a pivotal role in managing all aspects of the firm’s finances. In 2022, he reached the pinnacle of his career when he became the chief operating officer.
Mr. Harris graduated from the University of Utah in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in accounting in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He also holds credentials as a certified public accountant. His education has been foundational to his work in the industry. In addition to his degrees, Mr. Harris remains relevant as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Outside of his professional career, Mr. Harris is deeply committed to civic and charitable causes. Since 2022, he has been active on the board and serving as the treasurer and finance committee chair for South Valley Services. The nonprofit organization, which was founded in 1998, provides shelter and supportive services to women, men and their children who have been impacted by domestic and sexual violence throughout Salt Lake Valley and Utah County. Mr. Harris also joined the Giving Angels Foundation in 2024 as a board member, contributing to its mission to assist children from low-income families in acquiring necessities, such as socks, underwear, hygiene items, and more, through various fundraising programs. Giving back to worthy causes right in his neighborhood has incredible meaning for him.
In light of his remarkable success in his field, Mr. Harris was presented with a Forty Under 40 award from Utah Business in 2023. This accolade is a testament to the hard work and diligence he has put forth to accomplish his goals and continually progress in the finance and accounting sectors. His expertise in foreign currency and derivatives, as well as accounting and finance, have been instrumental to his career accomplishments. However, Mr. Harris attributes much of it to his extensive reading and tireless work ethic.
During his tenure with GPS Capital Markets, Mr. Harris has been fortunate to mentor and develop a group of employees and watch them flourish under his leadership. As he looks forward to the future at his firm, he is excited about the many upcoming changes due to its recent sale to a public entity. Mr. Harris is also motivated to continue contributing to the company’s growth.
