Mitchell C. Coyne

Title: Chief Commercial Officer
Company: BioIVT
Location: Millington, New Jersey, United States

Mitchell C. Coyne, chief commercial officer of BioIVT, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care and biotechnology research.

In his 40-year career, Mr. Coyne supported the delivery of life science products and service solutions to better the care and research for people in our communities and around the world. Initially serving as a U.S. Navy corpsman and operating room technician before moving into the private sector in various roles, starting as a sales professional, progressing into business development, and transitioning into leading and developing global businesses for privately-held, private equity, and Fortune 100 companies. He completed both his undergraduate degree and Master of Business Administration (MBA) while traveling and raising three successful kids. Mr. Coyne has had the privilege to be in operating rooms with world-renowned neuro- and orthopedic surgeons to advance the development of innovative and critically impactful devices.

Outside of the operating room, Mr. Coyne held leadership roles of influence during the H1N1 outbreak and COVID-19 pandemic, including as global business manager of 3Ms global infection prevention business, navigating supply constraints of personal protection masks and respirators. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he lead Thermo Fisher Scientific’s global cold storage business, steering the business team through extreme complexities of anticipating unprecedented demand for freezers, navigating global supply chain challenges for critical components to ensure ample capacity and supply of ULT (-80c) freezers for development of mRNA vaccine research, and the production, transportation and storage to ensure safe delivery of vaccines at points of care, globally. If it had not been for the many customer interactions, relationships developed with leading scientists, physicians and associations, the insights to innovate, develop or deliver critical solutions would not have been possible.

Mr. Coyne’s military background prepared him to lead business and teams during times of uncertainty and creatively deploy scarce resources under normal business conditions. His undergraduate degree at Northwestern College in St Paul, Minnesota, taught him servant leadership skills and he remains passionate about developing future leaders. Mr. Coyne has several company awards for his many innovative contributions and has been spotlighted by Fox Business News, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe and other media outlets at the height of COVID vaccine’s emergency use authorization.

Mr. Coyne had been blessed to be raised by supportive and loving grandparents that sacrificed much of their retirement years to help his mom in raising him and his two siblings. His mom was a pediatric care nurse for over 50 years at Summit Medical Group in New Jersey, working five to six days a week; her dedication, supported by his grandparents and the community around him deserve any and all acknowledgment for influencing him, providing a foundation and mindset of serving your community.

As he leans into retirement, Mr. Coyne often reflects on his early life, recalling how his grandmother often donated her time, creativity, and financial support to their community. She painted Helping Hands to place in windows during the 1970s during a national campaign to promote safety for kids, dipped old-fashioned candles for Washington’s Headquarters for candlelight tours, and donated to the Paper Mill Playhouse and other charities. His mom followed with support for ASPCA, St. Jude, Habitat for Humanity, and the Special Olympics, to name a few. Today, Mr. Coyne spends considerable time volunteering to support the Veterans of Foreign War Post 6259 Berkeley Heights and its surrounding communities in New Jersey, the Salvation Army, and giving back to neighbors where he grew up and returned to live out his retirement.

Leaving home with only a high school diploma and a year of community college, Mr. Coyne eventually returned with an MBA and a career of trying to do good. The Navy helped shaped him and afforded the incredible experience and confidence to enter the private sector. He incredulously recalls being tasked to a Navy surgical team operating on President Reagan when the President had cancer surgery in 1985. He never anticipated the career that he has had, including the ability to lead and develop future leaders, further stating, “life is messy, and if you rely only on yourself, you will fail.”

Mr. Coyne believes in faith, failure, and forgiveness and those principles will serve one well when leading others. Recognizing leadership is never about you, it is about what you can and should do to serve the communities and people around you. He personally suggests leadership is simplified by “focusing on doing the right thing at the right time and put blinders on to everything else that distracts you, it is then that you will become a more effective leader for your teams.“ Mindful of life’s trade-offs as they are more costly than any financial reward, he leans on faith when life gets messy and realizes there is no perfect person, product or service. Mr. Coyne believes you can always do better, innovate and accomplish anything to which you put your mind.
