Mr. Showers, a distinguished professional in the hospitality sector, has garnered success and expertise in the business for over 25 years. Since 2017, he has been affiliated with RLJ Lodging Trust, beginning as a senior director before being promoted to vice president of design and construction in 2023. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, RLI Lodging Trust is a self-advised, publicly traded real estate investment trust that owns over 95 premium brand hotels in various high-demand locations throughout the country, from California to Massachusetts and as far south as Florida.
Mr. Showers has numerous responsibilities in his leading role, leveraging his capital planning expertise to drive success. Since joining RLJ Lodging Trust, he has successfully managed an annual capital budget of $100 million and executed 99% of it. He has also overseen the execution of a portfolio of over 100 hotels, managing each project and ensuring completion. Instrumental in acquisitions and dispositions, Mr. Showers focuses heavily on process improvement and developing and maintaining brand relationships, which have been pivotal to his career. He notably oversees a team of six engineers and project execution support staff.
Before his tenure at RLJ Lodging Trust, Mr. Showers was the associate vice president of capital management at Ashford Inc., an alternative asset management company in Dallas, from 2016 to 2017. This senior leadership role included the project management and execution of all major renovations and property capital projects of its 129-property portfolio. Mr. Showers also excelled as a senior director of capital management and underwriting at the real estate investment trust, Ashford Hospitality Trust, in Dallas, between 2013 and 2016, after initially being hired as a senior director of asset management and underwriting in 2007.
Mr. Showers’ earlier career set the tone for his future success when he worked for PKF Consulting as a consultant from 1998 to 2005, involved in hotel appraisals, feasibility studies, impact studies, and other areas of the business. He then joined InterContinental Hotel Groups, a global hospitality company based in England, as a project manager of investment analysis, where he was tasked with discounted cash flow and internal rate of return analysis, pro forma development, financial modeling, market research and hotel underwriting, until 2007.
A graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, Mr. Showers received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1998. His education was foundational to his business acumen and strong analytical skills.
Mr. Showers has been afforded many opportunities throughout his career and has remained steadfast about continuous growth. As a seasoned senior director of design and construction, he has become proficient in understanding capital management and how different pieces of equipment function within hotel operations, and his knowledge has enabled him to efficiently assess the needs of hotels from both a construction and operational perspective. His added expertise in such areas as feasibility studies, mergers and acquisitions, asset management and market research adds to his qualifications. As he looks forward to additional advancement in the hospitality industry, Mr. Showers envisions earning a senior-level position, such as a senior vice president or executive vice president of a company, where he can manage their capital management group and continue to impact the field.
