Dr. German has established a distinguished career spanning over five decades in the field of political science, marked by significant academic, editorial and leadership roles. Since 2021, he has served as the co-editor for Politics, Culture, and Socialization with Barbara Budrich Publisher. In this capacity, Dr. German communicates globally through digital platforms to monitor developments in news, publications, politics and culture, reflecting his expertise in digital society.

Leveraging his editorial expertise, which has extended internationally, Dr. German was an English editor for the Institute of Higher Education at China University of Mining and Technology from 2014 to 2015. He served in the same position at Meitan Higher Education, focusing on translating from Chinese to American English, between 2016 and 2021.

A professor emeritus at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, since 2008, Dr. German began teaching on campus as an assistant professor of political science in 1972 and was promoted to full professor in 1976. He also excelled in teaching government and justice studies his entire career at the university. Dr. German’s tenure was marked by the establishment of the Dr. Daniel B. German Eminent Professorship in Political Science, an endowed position supported by over $1 million from the institution, the state of North Carolina, the Spangler Foundation, J.D. Spangler and private donors. This professorship has attracted prominent scholars, such as Cedric Bindi from the University of Rome, to serve as fellows or visiting eminent professors.

Before being acquired by Appalachian State University, Dr. German taught as an assistant professor of political science at George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1968 to 1972.

Dr. German’s professional journey began with roles outside academia. He served as an aide to a former U.S. Senator in Washington, D.C., from 1963 to 1967 and later became the co-campaign manager for Andrew Young’s campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1972. Moreover, Dr. German spent a year as a technical advisor to the World Bank at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, in 1994.

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. German’s commitment to global education was demonstrated by his lectureships in China. In 2010, he presented “Americans’ View of China, the Chinese People’s View of America and How Each View Themselves: The Other Side of Two Coins” at China University of Mining and Technology. In 2012, he delivered “A Globalizing World – America and China’s Role and Implications for Both” at Ocean University of China and “A History of the Classics of Political Socialization Research Theory in Western Civilization from Ancient Greece to the Twenty-First Century” at China University of Mining and Technology.

Dr. German’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a Master of Arts in 1964 from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1970 after completing a graduate fellowship with the Educational Testing Service in Princeton in 1967.

Extensively involved in professional affiliations, Dr. German has been affiliated with the International Political Science Association in various roles and as a member of the American Political Science Association. His scholarly output has included numerous publications and editorial projects that have advanced understanding within political science and socialization research. He also contributed a book chapter for R. R. Farnen’s “Nationalism, Ethnicity, and Identity: Cross-National and Comparative Perspectives” in 1994 titled ‘The Role of Media in Political Socialization and Attitude Formation Toward Racial Ethnic Minorities in the United States.’ Dr. German is currently a reviewer for the Asian Journal for Public Opinion Research.

Throughout his career, Dr. German has been recognized for his scholarly achievements and contributions to education. He received numerous grants and stipends from organizations like the American Political Science Association, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Ford Foundation.

Among Dr. German’s honors, he received recognition as an Outstanding University Teacher by Appalachian State University in 1976. He was later named an honoree for the Dr. Daniel B. German Eminent Professorship in Political Science by the university in 2008.

Looking ahead, Dr. German remains committed to advancing scholarship through editing and peer review, while emphasizing the transformation of society brought about by digital communication platforms. Dr. German also advocates exploring new methods for effective engagement across ideological divides, an endeavor he views as essential for sustaining democratic values in the face of evolving societal challenges.
