Mr. Ebbert, owner and principal architect at Landwave AE, a design consultancy in Arlington, Virginia, since 2001, is recognized for his decades of success in architecture. In his present position, he oversees all aspects of the firm’s operations, acting as the chief executive officer, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. Mr. Ebbert’s leadership is marked by a commitment to integrating environmental responsibility into architectural practice, with a particular focus on the relationship between building energy consumption and ocean acidification. His expertise in facilities architecture, business enterprise architecture and change management has positioned him as a leader in his field.

For four decades, Mr. Ebbert has also served as a consultant to personnel operating facilities at The Pentagon, providing guidance on daily operational challenges and supporting their understanding of complex facility systems.

Before launching Landwave AE, Mr. Ebbert worked as an architect at Little & Associates Architects from 1998 to 2001. Between 1994 and 1998, he was an architect at Rebecca Hubbard Architects. Mr. Ebbert’s early professional experience included a year at Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, a full-service, international architecture, engineering and design leader, starting in 1993, where he developed foundational skills in architectural design and project management. His architectural portfolio included numerous commercial and institutional projects for companies like Walmart, Men’s Wearhouse and First Union.

In addition to his career in this space, Mr. Ebbert spent 15 years as a drummer for Stealing Genius, an original composition band. He was instrumental in the creation of a progressive rock music album during his tenure with the group.

Mr. Ebbert earned a Bachelor of Architecture with a focus on urban design and engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1989. He also received certification in mapping the modern web design process from Lynda.com and is recognized as a resident architect by the state of Virginia. Mr. Ebbert’s academic background provided a strong foundation for his achievements in architectural innovation and environmental advocacy.

Active in his professional community, Mr. Ebbert has been affiliated with several associations, notably with Passive House Institute, North America, reflecting his dedication to advancing sustainable practices within the industry.

A significant milestone in Mr. Ebbert’s career was his transformative work with the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2008, he was tasked with conducting quality assurance for the facilities required for the decennial survey. Charged with leasing and building out 500 offices nationwide, he redefined the Bureau’s approach to working with leasing and architectural design professionals. His efforts resulted in a $50 million savings in rebuild and construction costs for the 2010 census. The success of Mr. Ebbert’s work on the 2008 census led to his return for the 2020 census, and he anticipates contributing again for the 2030 cycle.

Mr. Ebbert is recognized for his long-standing interest in environmental issues within architecture. Notably, he has sought ways throughout his career to address these concerns through both professional practice and public communication. He is currently preparing to release a YouTube series titled “Save the Whales,” a 10-part series of 10-minute videos that chronicles his journey as an architect exploring the intersection of building energy use and ocean health. Additionally, Mr. Ebbert is set to launch Radio Pacifica, a photography practice specializing in landscape, urban and environmental photography.

Mr. Ebbert attributes his success to perseverance, accepting support from others, and maintaining clear priorities focused on helping others. Looking ahead, he aims to empower other architects and their collaborators to significantly reduce energy consumption within the built environment.
