From 2016 to 2018, Dr. Jaramillo served as an economist for the Presidency of the Republic of Colombia. Dr. Jaramillo’s earlier experience included serving as a research assistant at Harvard University from 2015 to 2016, where he worked on econometric models and developed extensive data visualizations, deepening his analytical skills.
A defining milestone in Dr. Jaramillo’s career was his tenure as an advisor at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia from 2013 to 2014. At just 22 years old, he joined the leadership team responsible for regulating drug prices in Colombia, a critical intervention that generated substantial savings for the health care system. These savings enabled free insurance coverage for two million people annually, a contribution that remains one of Dr. Jaramillo’s proudest achievements for its significant impact on public welfare and for demonstrating his leadership early in his career.
Dr. Jaramillo’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, in 2015, followed by a general course at The London School of Economics and Political Science in 2015. He also earned a Master of Science in economics from the University of the Andes in 2017 before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he received a Master of Arts in economics in 2022 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 2025. This rigorous academic training has provided Dr. Jaramillo with a robust foundation for his research endeavors and policy advisory work. Born in Bogotá, he is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese, an asset that enhances his ability to collaborate internationally across diverse contexts.
Professionally active, Dr. Jaramillo maintains active membership in leading organizations, including the American Economic Association, the European Economic Association, and the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association. These affiliations reflect his commitment to both academic excellence and public service. Earlier, Dr. Jaramillo was instrumental as a founding president of the Finance and Investment Club at the University of the Andes from 2010 to 2012 and as a program advisor for Juan Manuel Santos Presidente in 2014 and Alejandro Gaviria Presidente between 2021 and 2022.
Dr. Jaramillo’s dedication extends beyond his professional roles into civic engagement and mentorship. He has volunteered as a mentor for diversity at the University of Ireland and was a student ambassador at the University of Maryland, supporting diversity initiatives and fostering inclusive academic environments.
