Mr. McCain is recognized for his service and leadership in local government following a distinguished career in management. Since 2019, he has acted as the chair of the Sumter County Council for the 6th District in Sumter, South Carolina. In this capacity, Mr. McCain has overseen significant initiatives and provided strategic direction to address his community’s needs. His tenure on the council began 10 years ago, in 2015, and he continues to work diligently to represent his constituents’ interests, with a focus on transparency and honest public service.
Before his current role in local government, Mr. McCain built a notable career at United Parcel Service (UPS), where he retired as a service excellence manager in 2007 after 35 years of distinguished service. Joining UPS in 1972, he advanced through various positions, ultimately playing a pivotal role in modernizing the company’s customer service operations.
Among his most significant accomplishments during his tenure with UPS was Mr. McCain’s selection for a special assignment at the corporate office in Greenwich, Connecticut. At that time, all UPS operations were managed manually, with customers relying on phone calls to arrange pickups or track packages. Despite not having a background in computer technology, Mr. McCain was chosen to join the team responsible for digitizing call centers nationwide. His contributions helped transform UPS’s customer service infrastructure from paper-based processes to digital systems, streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency across the organization.
Mr. McCain’s academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, conferred in 1973. The knowledge and skills acquired during his studies have been instrumental throughout his professional journey, equipping him with expertise in organizational management and strategic planning.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. McCain has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to civic engagement and community development. He currently serves as chair of the board of trustees at Westend Community Church and as the chair of the South Carolina Association of County Council Coalitions. He also serves as the vice chair of the board of the Santee Lynches Regional Council of Governments and chair of its chief elected officials’ group, where he contributes to regional planning and intergovernmental collaboration. Additionally, Mr. McCain has excelled as the president of the board of Sumter United Ministries, as a board member of the YMCA, as an executive committee member of the Main Street Society, and through membership on the Shaw/Sumter Community Council. Previously, he served as the board chair of the Sumter County Gallery of Art.
Mr. McCain credits his enduring success to a guiding principle adopted during his tenure at UPS. He notes that if he takes care of his character, his reputation will take care of itself.
