Since assuming his position as superintendent, Mr. Chestnut has collaborated with professionals from the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, enhancing field support and maintenance standards within Collinsville’s parks system. He has also implemented native plantings and established no-mow zones throughout city parks, advancing both sustainability and biodiversity efforts.
Leveraging his former expertise, Mr. Chestnut served with the city of Ferguson, Missouri, from 2006 to 2018. His tenure with the city allowed him to master the intricacies of public works. Advancing through several positions, Mr. Chestnut ultimately became the street department foreman. During this period, he collaborated closely with the parks department, a partnership that revealed his passion for parks management and shaped his future career trajectory. Despite limited training resources in Ferguson, Mr. Chestnut proactively sought knowledge through independent study and professional networking, creating growth opportunities that would later inform his leadership approach in Collinsville.
Mr. Chestnut’s educational foundation was established at North County Christian School in Ferguson, where he earned a high school diploma in 1999. Although he did not pursue college studies, he credits his success to unwavering family support and the welcoming environment provided by the city of Collinsville. The encouragement he received upon joining Collinsville empowered him to embrace new opportunities with confidence. Mr. Chestnut also benefited from influential mentorship from Collinsville’s director, who further guided his professional development by providing essential resources and direction.
Among Mr. Chestnut’s professional affiliations, he is an active member of the National Recreation and Park Association, the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, and the Gateway chapter of the Sports Field Management Association, all of which reflect his dedication to industry advancement and community engagement. He also chairs the grounds committee for the Southern Illinois Parks and Recreation Association. In this role, Mr. Chestnut participates in monthly calls where committee members seek his guidance on topics ranging from lawn applications for ball fields to equipment selection for challenging landscapes. Drawing on personal experience with specialized machinery for managing difficult inclines, he offers practical solutions tailored to varying municipal budgets, including advocating for native restoration areas when equipment is not feasible. Mr. Chestnut’s active involvement in the Southern Illinois Parks and Recreation Association has allowed him to develop meaningful connections with professionals from communities such as Edwardsville, O’Fallon and Granite City, establishing him as a trusted resource among his peers.
Beyond his municipal responsibilities, Mr. Chestnut demonstrates civic commitment by volunteering with his homeowners’ association. He also supports local sporting activities, including basketball, kickball and dodgeball.
