José Luzardo Estrada, DVM, MS, PhD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Clones and Genes Bioscience LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Animal Biotechnology, Xenotransplantation and Biomedical Research.

With a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Estrada has established himself as a leading authority in animal biotechnology, cloning, nuclear transfer and the development of biomodels for human diseases. His expertise encompasses research, education and healthcare, with notable contributions to xenotransplantation and reproductive technologies.

In 2025, Dr. Estrada retired from his role as an associate professor of research at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, after more than five years of service from 2019 to 2025. During his tenure in Miami, he advanced pioneering work in xenotransplantation and animal model development. Dr. Estrada is particularly proud of his contribution to the creation of a foundational animal model for the production of genetically modified pigs intended as organ donors for humans. This achievement culminated in a highly cited 2015 publication in Xenotransplantation titled “Evaluation of human and non-human primate antibody binding to pig cells lacking GGTA1/CMAH/ß4GalNT2 genes,” which remains a benchmark in the field.

In recent years, Dr. Estrada founded Clones and Genes Bioscience LLC alongside his wife. As the founder and chief executive officer since 2025, he has focused on developing consulting services for both academic institutions and private companies interested in specialized animal production and biotechnology solutions. The company aims to bridge international opportunities within the field by leveraging Dr. Estrada’s extensive experience.

From 2007 to 2016, Dr. Estrada served as a research assistant professor at Indiana University. For more than 10 years, he conducted research in xenotransplantation and received recognition for outstanding scientific projects. Earlier, Dr. Estrada served as a research assistant professor at The University of Alabama. He ultimately brought his entire xenotransplantation program to Miami upon invitation from the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami.

While in Colombia, Dr. Estrada held several prominent leadership positions, including director of the Institute of Genetics at the National University of Colombia, the country’s largest university, where he also served as a professor. His work there was instrumental in advancing medical science, veterinary science and agronomic science through genetics research.

Before his contributions to the Institute of Genetics, Dr. Estrada excelled as the director of the national biotechnology program at the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (Colombian Agricultural Institute), where he led initiatives that resulted in Colombia’s first cattle in vitro fertilization and the establishment of the nation’s germplasm bank of embryos. These efforts contributed significantly to the preservation and development of criollo breeds within animal genetic resources. Additionally, Dr. Estrada directed national programs for biosecurity and animal genetic resources while holding professorships at two other Colombian universities.

Dr. Estrada’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. After his undergraduate work, he completed a Master of Science in reproduction and genetics, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and a Doctor of Philosophy in animal sciences and biotechnology with a focus on genetics and reproduction from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. This academic training provided him with expertise that proved critical throughout his career, from groundbreaking embryo research to leadership roles in genetics institutes.

Dr. Estrada’s enduring commitment to science is further reflected by his willingness to review scholarly work as a form of service to the scientific community, an endeavor he finds both valuable and rewarding even after retirement. Notably, his scholarly output has included serving as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for multiple leading publications, such as Xenotransplantation, Transplantation, Cloning Stem Cells and several MDPI journals, covering animal science, genetics, reproduction and molecular genetics.

Throughout his professional journey, Dr. Estrada has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including a Best Scientific Project award at Indiana University and a Best Scientific Project award at the National University of Colombia for outstanding research contributions, as well as the Carl-Gustav Groth Xeno Prize Award in 2012 for excellence in xenotransplantation research.

Dr. Estrada credits his success to hard work, dedication and values instilled by family, particularly honesty and perseverance, as well as guidance from exceptional mentors. He believes that being surrounded by capable collaborators has played an essential role in shaping his professional growth.

Looking ahead, Dr. Estrada intends to continue contributing to scientific advancement through ongoing roles as an editorial board member and peer reviewer while focusing on authoring a book that documents his extensive knowledge base, particularly regarding cloning technologies and animal models for human disease research. Dr. Estrada is also considering expanding his engagement into community-based or volunteer activities beyond academia.
