For more than four decades, Mr. Sun has devoted himself to his career, distinguishing himself as a leader in global business, consulting and professional coaching. Since 2024, he has served as the managing director at Sun and Moon Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada, having previously worked in a part-time capacity, beginning in 1995. Through his role, he has provided strategic guidance to clients across the biotechnology, retail, e-commerce and manufacturing sectors, specializing in investments between Asian countries and the United States.
Mr. Sun’s expertise is further demonstrated through his work as a founding partner at Definitive Design Development Group in California since 2001. For over 25 years, his real estate design and development company has supported clients in their ventures to build multi-million dollar residential, commercial, and retail projects throughout Southern California.
Previously, Mr. Sun held the position of partner and chief executive officer at Coaching International from 2020 to 2023. Earlier in his career, he excelled as the president of Aurasound between 1992 and 1997. Mr. Sun’s professional experience has extended to managing a German audio company for nearly three decades, broadening his global outlook.
Mr. Sun’s educational foundation began at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics, with honors, in 1978 after initially pursuing pre-dental studies. His decision to pivot from dentistry to economics was driven by a desire for greater fulfillment, a lesson that now informs his guidance for young professionals facing similar crossroads. Mr. Sun later obtained a Master of Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach, in 1980. Additionally, he became certified as a PTI talent insight coach.
Beyond his primary roles, Mr. Sun has been active in a civic capacity, having served on numerous boards and advisory committees with educational institutions, business councils and nonprofit organizations as a dedicated member of his community. As a founding member and lifetime member of the Young Presidents’ Organization and the World Presidents’ Organization, Santa Monica Bay, since 1986, he has built an extensive network among global business leaders. From 2012 to 2024, Mr. Sun was the president of the Shady Canyon Community Association in Irvine, California. Among numerous other leadership roles and contributions, he held executive memberships with the Asian Business Association and the Asian Business League, held board positions with the Hong Kong Business Association of Southern California and the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles (now International Citizen Diplomacy of Los Angeles) and was active on the board of directors for the Long Beach Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Greater Los Angeles Area Council Boy Scouts. Additionally, Mr. Sun has volunteered with organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Mr. Sun’s commitment to mentorship is evident in his recent focus on coaching high school and college students. He employs techniques such as the FORD method to help young people clarify their goals and make informed decisions about their academic majors and career paths. Mr. Sun’s approach emphasizes self-awareness, empathy and understanding diverse personality types.
Notably, Mr. Sun is the creator of a five-book series on leadership operating systems, which include “The Sponge Leader,” “The People Leader,” “The Process Leader,” “Technology Leader” and “A Complete Leader.” These works synthesize his insights on leadership development, communication and adaptability in the face of technological change. The books are available in print, on Kindle and as audiobooks on Spotify.
Throughout his professional life, Mr. Sun has drawn upon his unique cross-cultural background. Born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Hong Kong before moving to the United States for high school, he developed a nuanced understanding of both Eastern and Western traditions. This dual perspective has allowed Mr. Sun to navigate international markets with agility and foster effective cross-cultural relationships.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Sun has had the opportunity to work with Steve Jobs during Apple’s formative years. He also sold products to Bill Gates, one of his largest clients, and collaborated with Michael Dell while helping introduce Compaq Computer to Asian markets. He also contributed to Apple’s early retail strategy by opening the first Apple Center in Hong Kong before the launch of official Apple Stores.
Mr. Sun’s achievements have been recognized through numerous awards and recognitions, including several Entrepreneur of the Year accolades, an Administrator’s Award for Excellence from the U.S. Small Business Administration and a Businessman of the Year award from the Asian Business League, among numerous others. He credits much of his success to being present at pivotal moments in the technology industry’s evolution.
Looking ahead, Mr. Sun remains committed to supporting young people as they identify interests aligned with their strengths and develop essential skills for future success. Through writing new books on leadership development topics and ongoing coaching efforts with students at various stages, from high school through early professional life, he aims to help others avoid unnecessary missteps while maximizing their potential contributions within their chosen fields.
