Coming of age in rural Bangladesh, Mr. Ali, since childhood, found inspiration in the biographies of various historical figures, such as Thomas Edison, Alfred Nobel, Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie, and Leo Tolstoy. Drawing from their stories of hardship and success, he vowed to allow optimism and perseverance to serve as the guiding principles of his journey toward becoming a top professional. Quickly drawn to scientific pursuits soon thereafter, Mr. Ali earned a full scholarship to attend university in the former Soviet Union, where he found joy in the academic atmosphere and undertook a variety of coursework in electrical engineering and photography.
After earning a combined degree of Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Belarusian National Technical University, Minsk, Belarus in 1991, Mr. Ali moved to the United States to pursue further higher education. Settling in New York City, he studied computer science at the City University of New York and worked for a local Bengali newspaper during a period of great economic hardship and recession. Relocating to Canada in 1995, he resumed his studies in Information Technology (IT) and began his career in earnest, working tirelessly for such companies as Phonettix Intelecom, Bell Canada, Nortel Networks, and MetaSolv Software. It was during this time that Mr. Ali advanced to positions of leadership and garnered distinction as a top professional, managing various teams and becoming an expert resource on a number of software and network technologies.
Following the turn of the century, Mr. Ali pivoted to specialize in financial risk analytics and integration engineering at IBM Canada from 2006 to 2017, leveraging his technical and business skills to great effect and forging long-lasting relationships with various financial institutions, he assisted those clients in transforming their financial risk management process across a wide range of risk categories including market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, asset liability management, economic capital, and regulatory capital with Basel accords. In honor of his accomplishments, including the development of a diagnostic utility tool to monitor and improve system performance efficiency, he was bestowed with numerous accolades that honored his propensity for putting the needs of his clients first, as well as the “Be Essential Hero” award for IBM Innovation in 2017.
Returning to New York with a renewed sense of determination and resolve, Mr. Ali was employed as a TCS consultant and he went on to serve as a senior consultant at AIG from 2017 until 2019, during which time his fluency in data analytics, investment & risk analytics, and investment operations continued to prove invaluable. Following this period, he transitioned to a lead business analysis role at American Century Investments, where he continued to furnish his exceptional technical and business analysis and data analysis acumen for various development projects such as product and portfolio master, security master, client data management, and investment reporting systems between 2019 and 2023. Mr. Ali’s journey as a top professional subsequently culminated with his current role as the vice president of liquidity risk management and business analysis at Citigroup Inc., one of the largest banking institutions in the world, contributing to a high-impact liquidity management projects, driving business requirements, and engaging with senior stakeholders regarding those projects.
Over the span of his evolving career, Mr. Ali has established himself as a well-respected asset through continuing education and certification in a vast number of disciplines, encompassing several computer programming languages, business communications, data analytics, trading and finance, management, leadership, client management, and financial risk management. Reflecting these multifaceted skills, he has earned a professional designation of Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) through the Canadian Securities Institute. Furthermore, to remain aware of developments in various fields, Mr. Ali maintains his affiliation with the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) and Canadian Securities Institute (CSI), and previously held membership in the IEEE.
