With a distinguished career spanning several decades, Mr. Patrick has established himself as an authority in the financial services sector, particularly in the specialized fields of financial risk management, geopolitics and geoeconomics. For the past 10 years, he has served as a managing director at TIAA, one of the world’s largest asset managers.
Working from TIAA’s headquarters in New York City, Mr. Patrick oversees global country risk for general account investments across more than 100 non-U.S. jurisdictions. He leads teams responsible for macroeconomic assessments of both U.S. and international economies. Mr. Patrick’s responsibilities further include generating macroeconomic scenarios to support financial planning and capital stress testing processes, managing the global credit risk team, and evaluating country risk exposures to recommend changes to country limits and investment views.
Mr. Patrick’s expertise is further demonstrated through his advisory role to business units on risks and mitigants related to international investments. He monitors global news flow and provides regular updates on macroeconomic conditions while briefing senior management, board members, and stakeholders on geopolitical and economic risks. His work involves managing ratings frameworks used for potential loss modeling of corporate, public and private credit assets. Conducting due diligence through international research and on-site engagements, Mr. Patrick meets with government officials, central bank leaders and other key decision-makers to assess regional conditions. As a frequent public speaker at industry conferences and forums, he collaborates with external research providers on political and economic intelligence and participates in policy discussions through professional organizations, such as the Council on Foreign Relations.
Before his tenure at TIAA, which began in 2016, Mr. Patrick was an executive director at JPMorgan Chase & Co., where he led Asia-Pacific country risk management from 2014 to 2016 in Hong Kong. Between 2011 and 2014, he focused on developed markets in Latin America from New York. Notably, Mr. Patrick’s leadership at JPMorgan included developing a comprehensive loss-and-coverage platform for developing countries, a two-year initiative that required significant planning and execution.
Recruited from Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., Mr. Patrick joined the organization in 2000 and remained until 2008, when the firm filed for bankruptcy, one of the largest bankruptcies in history. Following this, he worked at the Lehman Asset Management Company from 2008 to 2011, where he served as a lead negotiator for the workout of derivatives stemming from the Lehman bankruptcy. This period tested Mr. Patrick’s resilience and adaptability as he navigated complex financial restructuring during one of the most challenging times in modern finance.
Mr. Patrick’s earlier career was rooted in public service as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State from 1991 to 2000. He held assignments in Lima, Peru, Singapore and Washington, D.C., culminating in a leadership role within the Office of Monetary Affairs during the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s.
Before entering diplomacy and finance, Mr. Patrick was a teaching assistant at the University of Michigan between 1988 and 1990 while pursuing doctoral coursework in history, a foundation that would later inform his nuanced understanding of global affairs. He also worked with the National Association for the Southern Poor in Washington, D.C., from 1987 to 1988, promoting community political development in the Black Belt South after graduating from college. Mr. Patrick’s professional journey began as a schoolteacher at Country Day School in San José, Costa Rica, in 1986.
Mr. Patrick’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in history from Pomona College, earned in 1986, and a master’s degree in history from the University of Michigan, acquired in 1990. The analytical skills honed during these academic pursuits have been instrumental throughout his career.
Beyond professional duties, Mr. Patrick has been actively engaged with leading organizations, such as the Council on Global Innovation and Competition, the Market Monitoring Group at the Institute of International Finance and the Council on Foreign Relations as a life member. These affiliations keep him connected with thought leaders addressing critical issues at the intersection of finance, policy and security.
Civic engagement is another dimension of Mr. Patrick’s life. He has frequently volunteered for cleanups in New York, prepared meal packages for those in need and contributed time to The Ditchley Foundation as well as Heifer International.
Throughout his career, Mr. Patrick has been recognized for his innovative approaches to risk management, most notably implementing scenario frameworks and tabletop exercises at TIAA that address geopolitical volatility affecting insurance portfolios worldwide. These initiatives are considered distinctive within the industry. A hallmark of Mr. Patrick’s success is his ability to integrate lessons learned across sectors, whether navigating institutional power dynamics or responding under pressure during periods of organizational stress such as the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy. He credits personal resilience for transforming setbacks into opportunities for growth and reinvention.
In recognition of Mr. Patrick’s efforts coordinating the State Department’s response while employed as a foreign service officer, he received the Superior Honor Award in 1998. Looking ahead, he remains committed to enhancing safety, security and effectiveness for both his organization and broader society, particularly by safeguarding retirement security for educators within tertiary education across the United States while contributing toward a more stable international environment.
