Erin E. Virtue, Women’s Volleyball Head Coach at University of Michigan Athletics, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Sports.
Ms. Virtue, a renowned sports coach with 20 years of experience, has split her time between roles between USA Volleyball and the University of Michigan Athletics. Since 2017, she has served as the organization’s women’s national team assistant coach, as well as a program developer and director. Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Volleyball serves as the national governing body for the sport of volleyball in the U.S. Additionally, Ms. Virtue has taken on the role of head coach for the women’s volleyball team at the University of Michigan Athletics since 2023, where she has been responsible for coaching, conducting training practice, recruiting new players and participating in meetings.
Before earning her present positions, Ms. Virtue garnered significant experience on the women’s national team as an athlete with USA Volleyball from 2005 to 2006. However, while training with the national team, she suffered a knee injury that prevented her from playing further. During that time, Ms. Virtue chose to pivot and pursue coaching. Shortly after that, she was acquired by the University of Cincinnati in 2007 as an assistant coach, where she remained until 2011.
Following her tenure in Cincinnati, the University of Michigan hired Ms. Virtue as the assistant coach for the first time from 2011 to 2016. She then became the associate head coach at Northwestern University between 2016 and 2018.
A graduate of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Ms. Virtue obtained a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology in 2005. Continuing her studies, she was accepted to Loyola University Chicago, where she completed her master’s degree in 2007. In addition to her degrees, Ms. Virtue received executive leadership certification from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2018.
As part of her continued success as a coach, Ms. Virtue is active as a professional member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and USA Volleyball. These memberships have been instrumental in her ability to remain at the forefront of her field.
Ms. Virtue first developed a skill and passion for the sport of volleyball playing in youth leagues. Over the years, she continually progressed, recognized for her hard work as part of the final four team at the University of Michigan in 2012, by winning three gold medals from the Volleyball Women’s Nations League in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and winning a silver medal at the Volleyball Women’s World Cup in 2019. Among other noteworthy accolades, Ms. Virtue was a three-time 30 Under 30 recipient by the AVCA and was decorated with a prestigious Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics as part of the U.S. Volleyball team during the summer games of 2021.
Attributing her success to her strong work ethic and integrity and taking advantage of opportunities presented to her, Ms. Virtue now enjoys preparing the next generation of athletes as they perfect the game of volleyball. Eager to continue making a difference, she intends to lead the University of Michigan volleyball team to a national stage and achieve a consistent ranking in the top 10-20 teams.
