He currently excels as senior director of safety at Herc Rentals Inc., a position he has held since 2024. His tenure at Herc Rentals includes roles such as director of safety from 2022 to 2024, senior regional safety manager from 2020 to 2022, and regional safety manager from 2019 to 2020. Additionally, he served as corporate health, safety, and environmental manager at Construction & Turnaround Services from 2016 to 2020. He also held various leadership positions at Baker Hughes, a GE Company, including operations support, competency assurance manager, and district safety and training supervisor from 2014 to 2016. He worked as an occupational safety and health field training instructor and consultant for Colston Safety & Training and the Houston Area Safety Council between 2008 and 2014. He began his career as a petrochemical process operator at Kirby from 2006 to 2008, advancing into more senior roles throughout his tenure.
Additionally, he dedicated his time as a division supervisor and technical adviser with the U.S. Army from 2006 to 2016 and as an investigator and personnel supervisor with Construction & Turnaround Services for the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2006. He is an active member of the American Legion, American Society of Safety Engineers, Institute of Safety and Health Management, National Eagle Scout Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He has also served as an area representative for the Veteran’s Resource Group since 2020 and previously held the role of chairman from 2015 to 2016. In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Phillips has been honored with accolades such as the U.S. Army SECRET Clearance in 2001, the Meritorious Service Medal from the U.S. Army, and Eagle Scout designation with Boy Scouts of America in 1996. He laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in occupational safety and health from Columbia Southern University in 2015. He earned his Certified Safety Professional certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals in 2017 and completed the Management and Leadership for EHS Professionals program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Reflecting on his career path, Mr. Phillips has made significant contributions to Herc Rentals Inc. over the past five years. Leading a team of 23 to 25 safety professionals, he effectively manages safety operations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. His passion for safety stems from a personal experience early in his career when a poorly managed workplace injury motivated him to pursue a direction dedicated to improving safety practices. He attributes his success to a strong work ethic and a commitment to taking ownership of his responsibilities. He credits his upbringing for instilling a leadership mindset that drives him to embrace challenges and excel in his field.
