Mr. Huffman, president of Hickory Sheet Metal Company in Hickory, North Carolina, has been at the helm of his thriving family business for over 45 years. Establishing himself as a leader in the industry, he took over the company in 1978 after being founded by his grandfather, Lee J.M. Huffman, in 1928. Working alongside his father, Dolan Huffman, Mr. Huffman is a third-generation leader of the organization, best known for providing stellar heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) services for over 95 years. Since its founding, Hickory Sheet Metal Company has expanded from North Carolina to upstate South Carolina and most of western North Carolina. The company has also implemented state-of-the-art technology to meet the demands of the industry.
As part of his responsibilities, Mr. Huffman leads a team of experienced professionals designing and installing industrial, commercial, and institutional HVAC services. He is also tasked with managing all operational pieces, from working with the banks to dealing with insurance and bonding companies. He also engages in design work. Grateful to still be able to work alongside his father, now 95, Mr. Huffman was fortunate to garner success under his mentorship his entire career. Sharing an excellent working relationship as shared owners of Hickory Sheet Metal Company, his father still comes to work every morning for several hours per day to contribute to various tasks.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Huffman received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering from North Carolina State University in 1978. That same year, he began serving as the president of Hickory Sheet Metal Company. Beyond his work-related credentials, Mr. Huffman received licensure through NASCAR as a licensed scuba diver, category-c skydiver and private pilot.
As part of his continued success, Mr. Huffman has been active in his industry as a member of several prominent professional organizations, including the Air Conditioning Contractors of America Association as an executive board member and past board chair. Proud to have served as the board chair for the largest HVAC contractor association in the U.S., especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was influential in leading the organization forward. Mr. Huffman is also a member and past chair of the Multi Heating and Air Conditioning Association. Moreover, he recently joined the Forbes Business Council in 2024.
Beyond his work-related ventures, Mr. Huffman has been active in his community through various initiatives. He volunteered by doing relief work following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, chaired the board of Lutherhaus in Hickory, chaired the board of Catawba Human, chaired and served on the advisory board for The Salvation Army USA, and twice chaired the Kiwanis Club of Hickory, where he is also a past president. Furthermore, Mr. Huffman was active on the board of directors for Sipes Orchard Home.
Honoring his many professional and personal accomplishments, Mr. Huffman has received a Community Service Award from the Air Conditioning Contractors of America Association Inc. and a President’s Award from the Kiwanis Club. He attributes his success to his passion for learning, his ability to interact with others and his good fortune of experiencing different cultures. Mr. Huffman’s expertise in construction and all areas of operations management, contract management, business development and negotiating have also been pivotal to his continued success and tenure in the industry as a prominent business owner. As he prepares for the future, he aims to continue growing the business and providing employee opportunities.
