Francois M. de Visscher, Founder and President at de Visscher Advisors and Co-Founder and Executive Chair at Family Office Direct Investment Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements and leadership in Finance and Consulting.

Mr. de Visscher’s distinguished career in finance spans more than three decades and is marked by his expertise in establishing financial investment partnerships among families and family offices, enhancing family and corporate governance, and providing financial consulting services. Since 2018, he has served as the co-founder and executive chair of Family Office Direct Investment Services (FODIS), a financial services company with a network of offices in New Canaan, Connecticut; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Palm Beach, Florida; and London, England. In this capacity, Mr. de Visscher oversees teams across multiple locations, develops and mentors younger professionals, and fosters connections between Belgium and the United States. His leadership at FODIS has helped expand direct investment opportunities for family offices, ultra-high-net-worth investors and business-owning families on an international scale.

Since 1990, Mr. de Visscher has also been the founder and president of de Visscher Advisors. Through this firm, he has advised over 400 family businesses and family offices worldwide on capital liquidity and governance issues. His work has been instrumental in helping families successfully transition their businesses across generations, a feat achieved by only a small percentage of family-owned enterprises. Mr. de Visscher is particularly proud of assisting clients in advancing their companies from the third to the fourth and even fifth generations by creating liquidity programs for shareholders, focusing on value growth and fostering strong community ties.

In addition to his advisory roles, Mr. de Visscher has served as an honorary consul of Belgium in Connecticut since 2003. In this diplomatic capacity, he promotes economic activities between Belgium and the United States while assisting Belgian citizens with various matters related to immigration and business.

Mr. de Visscher held the position of chair at Olympia Chimney Supply between 2008 and 2012. From 1990 to 2015, he was a board member of Bekaert in Brussels, where he contributed to the governance of his family’s company for 25 years before retiring from the board to support generational succession.

Earlier in his career, Mr. de Visscher joined Smith Barney in 1980 as a managing director within the corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions division. By 1985, he became a partner and established the Family Business Group, the first Wall Street initiative dedicated to advising family businesses on capital liquidity and control issues. Prior to his tenure at Smith Barney, Mr. de Visscher worked with Coopers & Lybrand from 1977 to 1980 while completing his graduate studies.

Beyond his primary business ventures, Mr. de Visscher has held several trustee or board member roles with organizations such as CYMI Trust, Ultra Pure LLC and Microboard Processing, Inc. He is also a past president of the Family Firm Institute from 1997 to 2002, an organization central to research and education for family enterprises.

Mr. de Visscher’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in applied economics from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium in 1975 and a Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance from Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, in 1977. He became a certified public accountant in 1977, a credential that enhanced his early work with Coopers & Lybrand and provided technical expertise throughout his advisory practice.

Among his professional engagements, Mr. de Visscher is affiliated with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Aside from his work-related endeavors, he has been active with The University Club and The Links Club in New York, the Pawling Mountain Club in Pawling, New York, the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, the Club Colette in Palm Beach, and the Mirasol Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Furthermore, Mr. de Visscher has served as chair of the Society of Friends of Belgium in America since 2008, participates as a board member of the Royal Foundation and is a development committee member at The Avon Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut.

Mr. de Visscher’s commitment to advancing knowledge in his field is evident through his authorship of “Financing Transitions: Managing Capital and Liquidity in the Family Business,” published in 1995. This book remains a valuable resource at business schools such as Columbia University and has been translated into Chinese, Dutch, French and Spanish. Mr. de Visscher also authored “How Can Families Grow, Manage and Safeguard Their Long-Term Wealth?” for Tharawat Magazine. His insights have further appeared in leading publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Family Business Magazine.

Honored in 2002, Mr. de Visscher received the Richard Beckhard Practice Award from the Family Farm Institute for outstanding contributions to the field. Among other recognitions, he was named Knight of the Crown by the King of Belgium, one of the nation’s highest distinctions.

Throughout his career, Mr. de Visscher has attributed much of his success not only to technical proficiency but also to being an attentive listener, a skill learned from his father, who was a university professor at a medical school in Belgium. Mr. de Visscher believes that listening allows him to understand clients’ needs deeply, enabling him to address their concerns effectively rather than simply conveying his own ideas.

Looking ahead, Mr. de Visscher is committed to training young professionals who will continue supporting family businesses into future generations. He remains devoted to ensuring that advisory services for family enterprises thrive on strong foundations, which allows families to achieve lasting success while positively impacting their communities. Mr. de Visscher’s legacy is defined by unwavering integrity, impartiality when advising clients and steadfast belief that entrepreneurial families are essential pillars within society’s economic fabric.
