From 2015 to 2023, he served as a data project manager, following his tenure as an MIS data analyst and information technology coordinator between 2013 and 2015. During this period, Mr. Thigpen led major projects that advanced the center’s technological capabilities. Notably, his transition to G.A. Carmichael was motivated by a desire for professional growth after completing significant initiatives at Jackson-Hinds. The opportunity arose when the chief executive officer, also a fraternity brother, invited him to bring similar programs to G.A. Carmichael, a decision Mr. Thigpen considered carefully before accepting.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Thigpen dedicated 25 years to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi in the Greater Jackson Area of Mississippi. Beginning as an applications programmer in the division of Medicare in 1987, he continued in this capacity until 1997 before taking on the role of programmer analyst at Walmart in Bentonville, Arkansas, for one year. This experience provided valuable exposure within a Fortune 500 environment and broadened Mr. Thigpen’s technical perspective.
Returning to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, Mr. Thigpen worked as a systems business consultant from 1998 to 2003 before advancing to a senior programmer until 2012. Throughout his tenure, he held various positions, including drug coder, claims coder and customer service representative, later joining a dedicated unit responsible for comprehensive account support encompassing subrogation, customer service and claims processing. Mr. Thigpen ultimately transitioned into applications programming and contributed to the Medicare department.
Mr. Thigpen’s professional journey began after earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in mathematics with an emphasis in computer science from Tougaloo College in 1986, a foundation that has underpinned his subsequent accomplishments. He also participated in the UCLA Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Executive Program, an intensive experience that equipped him with principles and tools instrumental in his leadership at G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center Inc.
Beyond his professional roles, Mr. Thigpen is actively engaged with civic organizations that reflect his commitment to mentorship and community service. As a chapter advisor for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., he mentors younger members to support their academic success and organizational engagement. He also participates in the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) Community and Partnership Review Program by evaluating research proposals submitted for approval. Notably, Mr. Thigpen was an inaugural member of the All of Us Ambassador Program with the NIH, where he served on governance committees shaping research frameworks for the initiative.
Following completion of the program at UCLA, Mr. Thigpen was named a Top 100 global finalist among technology professionals in 2025. In 2026, he was selected as one of the Top 50 technology professionals globally and was named among the 10 Most Influential CIOs Powering Business Agility by CIO Views in 2026. Mr. Thigpen also highlights the recognition of his team as a Top 100 finalist as especially meaningful due to his commitment to collective growth and professional advancement.
Among other honors, he was featured on the cover of CIO Views magazine in an article titled ‘Tyrone Thigpen: Bridging the Gap Between Clinical Teams and Technology.’
Mr. Thigpen attributes his success first and foremost to his faith, striving always to follow divine direction throughout his career decisions. He also credits unwavering family support along with encouragement from Tougaloo College’s close-knit community as pivotal influences on his journey.
