Roger Newell, Mining Company Executive and Consulting Geologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of geology and business administration.
As a student, Dr. Newell attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He continued his education at the Colorado School of Mines, earning a Master of Science in 1971, and became a Henry DeWitt Smith Scholar at Stanford University in 1972. He earned a PhD from Stanford in 1975 and started working as a geologist and researcher for Kennecott Exploration Ltd, where he remained until 1977, when he transitioned to a role as exploration geologist for Newmont Exploration Ltd.
In 1983, Dr. Newell rose to the rank of exploration manager at Newmont, and in 1989, he accepted a position as exploration manager for Gold Fields Mining Co., where he served until 1992, when he became the regional manager of the company. Upon his departure, he started as the vice president of development at Western Exploration Inc. in 1995, and after five years, he took a position with Capital Gold Inc., serving as vice president of development from 2000 to 2009.
Dr. Newell continued to amass experience and apply his expertise, taking on a role as president and chief executive officer of Lake Victoria Mining Co. in 2009, where he remained until 2015. In 2012, he additionally accepted a position as director of Midway Gold Inc., and in 2016, he left the company to work as a consulting geologist, which he continues to this day. Among Dr. Newell’s professional achievements, he developed the El Chanate Gold Mine in Sonora, Mexico, and in the coming years, he plans to continue his consulting work.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Newell has maintained memberships with a variety of organizations. He is a fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America, and has been a member of the American Institute of Mining and Exploration. He is a retired Qualified Professional Geologist with the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and since 2009, he has served as the director of the National Mining Hall of Fame. As a testament to his success and experience, Dr. Newell was featured in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the West.
