Mr. Smith is the owner of Total Homes, LLC, a construction company specializing in custom home building and major remodeling for more than four decades. Naturally entrepreneurial, Mr. Smith has completed coursework in accounting at the International Leadership School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is a licensed commodities broker and real estate agent. He began his career as the owner of an insurance sales business, in addition to spending three years as an employee of Miko Futures and an additional five as a professional banker.
He took his first steps into the construction industry in the late 1970s, while living in Swayzee, Indiana. Already a real estate broker, Mr. Smith was inspired to collaborate with a neighbor who owned a general contracting business, forming Jerry D. Smith and Associates. From 1977 until 1983, Mr. Smith and his partner teamed up to build and sell new homes in the area. During this period, he was a cornerstone of the local community, serving as a campaign manager for the United Fund and Western Grant County as well as securing a seat as President of the Oak Hill United School Corporation.
Mr. Smith is an expert in interior trim and finish, and has been elected president of his area home builders association. Total Homes, LLC, was named Grant County Builder of the Year in 2019, and continues to earn a reputation for quality. In addition to his success in building and construction, Mr. Smith is a United States Army veteran decorated with an Army Commendation Medal, and retired in 2014 from a career as a scheduler for the Marion Medical Center Primary Care Team. He attributes his diverse success to the influence and inspiration he received from his father, adding that “the only job there is is a good job.”
