He has held several roles at Toyota Financial Services, including group vice president and head of accounting and finance from 2019 to 2021, group vice president and chief accounting officer from 2016 to 2019, vice president and head of accounting and tax from 2010 to 2016, general manager and chief tax officer from 2007 to 2010, and national manager and tax director from 2002 to 2007. His earlier experience includes being a tax director at Asia Global Crossing Telecommunications, Inc. from 2001 to 2002 and a senior manager at KPMG from 1994 to 2000. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a bachelor’s in arts from East China Normal University, a Master of Arts from Tongji University, a master’s degree in taxation and a post-baccalaureate in accounting from Portland State University, and a PhD from the University of Bonn. He has also earned certifications as NACD Directorship Certified from the National Association of Corporate Directors and Certified Public Accountant from the California Board of Accountancy.
Additionally, Mr. Chu has served as a board director for the NACD North Texas Chapter since 2024, the Asia Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies from 2018 to 2023, and the Toyota Political Action Committee from 2018 to 2022. He holds memberships with the National Association of Corporate Directors, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Tax Executive Institute, and the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics. He takes great pride in his role as chief tax officer, where he saved the company over $5 billion and ensured that it was recognized as one of the most compliant companies in the U.S. by the Internal Revenue Service. As principal chief accounting officer, he improved the company’s accounting principles, resulting in 55 consecutive quarters without restatements, deficiencies in controls, or adjustments. Furthermore, as head of global internal controls, he successfully addressed FCPA issues for one of the largest companies in the world, ensuring compliance.
Mr. Chu attributes his success to having drive, which he defines as a combination of ambition, strategic thinking, and diligence. As an immigrant, he understands how crucial it is to overcome challenges such as language barriers and cultural differences and hopes his children will inherit this quality.
