Mr. Amato made these overseas trips three times over four years. Mr. Amato was just 19 when he first became responsible for managing his ship’s boiler.
Once he entered the civilian sector, Mr. Amato worked as a boil operator for several companies, including Lever Brothers Corporation and Saint Mary’s Medical Center. He then became a boiler operator and station engineer at Strauss Brewery and a boiler inspector for the Boiler Insurance Company and Kemper Insurance. Ultimately, Mr. Amato joined the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry in 1999 as its chief boiler inspector until 2019, where he set the record for the longest tenure in his position in the state, beginning his role at age 33. His tenure was marked by his success in developing the state’s boiler inspection program.
Earning numerous professional credentials, Mr. Amato became highly qualified in his field. He received designations as a certified team leader through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, received a chief A boiler operator’s license in Minnesota, and became recognized as a national board team leader through the National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors. He attributes much of his success today to his time serving his country. He also notes his experience in the insurance industry and the lessons he learned from the state of Minnesota about what not to do.
