Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley has established herself as a prominent leader in the nonprofit and sports sectors, with a career spanning more than three decades. For more than 15 years, she has served as the founder, president, executive director and head coach of the Discovery Chess Learning Academy, located in Richfield, Ohio. In this capacity, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley has been instrumental in teaching chess to children as young as 4 years old, developing age-appropriate curricula and managing grandmaster coaches.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley’s leadership extends to organizing and running chess tournaments, planning international exhibitions and simultaneous matches, and partnering with the Cleveland Clinic on the Chess for Cure fundraising initiative. Notably, Chess for Cure is a nonprofit initiative that she founded to raise awareness and funds for women’s gynecologic cancer research while empowering female chess players. Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley also organizes Girls Club rooms at national chess events, serves on U.S. Chess nomination committees, and mentors young female chess players and students. She is further dedicated to assisting with college applications and writing recommendation letters for female interns, furthering her commitment to women’s empowerment.

Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley was affiliated with the Discovery Montessori School in Akron, Ohio, from 2007 to 2021, where she contributed her expertise as an office manager and board member. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in administrative management and curriculum development while introducing chess as an educational tool.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley worked as a financial aid adviser at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, guiding students through complex financial processes and fostering their academic success. Her professional journey also included expertise in journalism as a news writer at WPXI-TV after working at the front desk at her alma mater, Point Park University, in Pittsburgh. Before relocating to the United States, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley gained valuable accounting experience at Credit Corporation Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, beginning in 1992.

Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley’s academic background included earning a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communication from Point Park University in 2000. She also completed coursework in accounting and marketing through the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants at RIMA College and received an American Degree Program certification from Mahkota College. These academic achievements have provided Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley with a strong foundation in communications, business management and strategic planning.

Further demonstrating her expertise, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley remains actively involved with several industry organizations. She has served on the women’s committee and the nominating committee of the U.S. Chess Federation since 2022 and 2025, respectively. Additionally, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley holds board positions with both the Ohio Chess Congress and the Ohio Chess Scholastic Program.

Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley’s civic engagement includes volunteering as a chess and life coach at the Indian River Juvenile Detention Correctional Facility in Massillon, Ohio, and the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Detention Correctional Facility in Cleveland, Ohio, since 2022. Through these roles, she mentors youth facing significant challenges, using chess as a tool for personal development. Most notably, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley launched Chess for Cure in 2024, an initiative that collaborates with the Cleveland Clinic to support women’s health causes. Under her guidance, the organization has raised over $35,000 for the Cleveland Clinic and approximately $20,000 for City of Hope Hospital in Southern California. She has also championed philanthropic efforts, including organizing gala events before international chess tournaments and recognizing women competitors with awards and prize money.

Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley’s contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the 2024 Philanthropy Award from the U.S. Chess Federation. She attributes her accomplishments to viewing chess not merely as a competitive sport but as a way of life that fosters critical thinking and resilience. Looking ahead, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley aims to expand Chess for Cure into a nationwide movement focused on advancing research in women’s gynecological health by raising funds and establishing programs in hospitals nationwide. She also intends to continue celebrating women’s achievements within the chess community through high-profile events featuring leaders from both medical and chess fields.
